CVJ Axle time :D
 

I'm getting ready to call CVJ in Denver to order two new half shaft axles.

My right side axle is making noise and my left one is cracked so I'm going to replace both.

When I call tomorrow can I purchase two half shafts? I don't have the time to send in my one good one for a rebuild. I'm guessing from the forum searches that they're going to cost at best $300 +shipping.

Any testimonials are good too ;)

My CVJs are still doing great (I did replace one after about 200K because the boot ripped, but I think something hit it). I believe there is a core charge if you don't send in the old ones.

CVJ axles are about $150 each plus a $50/axle core charge that they refund when you send the old axles back, plus shipping each way. Two years ago that process cost me a total of about $325. The total for that adventure under the car was about $375 including new sway bar links, final drive seals, and a couple of new tools. The axles are still going great today.

Cool so for 400$ I can get two manufactured axle shats and then just mail the things back for 50$.

I'm going to have to check out how much shipping is going to be on them.

Can't you just reboot them? I have four Febi cv boots to replace soon....

Doing it with the original style boot is impossible without special equipment (hydraulic press) etc... Flexx boots can be done DIY though. We did it on two of the SD's in June with good results. We even used some axles off of an '84 500SEL with 330k on it to replace the grinding/clanking ones on my dad's SD....they've been perfect so far, zero noise and smooth.

Yeah, rebooting an axle that makes noise is a waste of time. Finding a good used one can save big $$ though. Costs about $30-35 to reboot an axle with the Flexx boots. Used axle at junk yard = about $15-20.....so 60ish total.

But my cvj's are fine...I was advised not to use the flexx stuff so I went with Febi.

The Flexx boots are of thinner rubber so they will stretch and go over the hardware. Consequently they are good for "only" 10 years; the factory boots usually last 20. The real expense is the Flex gun -- I don't know if there's one in our tool rental program yet. If you have non-noisy joints and access to a Flexx gun, that is a good option.
