What is this?
Someone told me awhile what this is and how it is used, but in my travels that information has slipped my mind. Could someone inform me what this is that I am pointing to? In my 85 300D it's located directly on the driver's side of the engine bay towards the front of the car.
Also I'm guessing that the black box below it is the glow plug relay and strip fuse. Thanks!

It looks like where older models have a tach amp.Maybe service centers read rpms from there.

That is the thing that reads your engine RPM and displays it on the dash.

Only on the older models.

Now I don't want to seem foolish here, but that is a cap and I can screw it off.
Inside there are tiny little holes in a semi circle numbered 1 through 6 and a couple of flat holes below the semi circle. Is it just a diagnostic port? I can take a picture of it and show you guys what it looks like on the inside.

Yes. On older models the tachometer amplifier plugged in there, yours is just empty.

Not really a diagnostic port. Just a service port to check the RPMs.
