my 82sd vs 85 300d turbo

How many parts are interchangable? I found a pretty cheap 300d that was rear ended here in cali for a good price. I leave to head home in 2 days. Wondering if I should tow it home for a parts car. Its all really good except for that fact that it got hammered in the back.

Engine, trans, interior are all good and only 180k on the clock. will these all swap into my car easily?

The engines may have different oil canisters, clearance issues. But I would think you could swap 'em out. You'll notice different "plumbing" too, but you should be able to swap out those too.

The engine and transmission can be used in the SD without any difficulties.

However, the two vehicle are different chassis and none of the body components or interior components will interchange.

Bummer. It a bit much to pay for a motor and trans. Thanks for your help guys. There are a few nice 126s here but a little out of my price range. Stupid slow market.

How much they asking for it?

You could part it out, sell the parts, up grade your SD with the proceeds.

the 85 has the 2:88 diff. not a lot of them around. there are guys looking for the cali air filter.

4 doors to part out. and the L/F window motor isn`t available anymore for the 123. so there are 4 window motors.

If it is a rust free body, sell the body parts, rear 1/4, floor pans etc....

the long blocks are the same, just a few bolt on items to swap between the 2 bodies.

Many electrical items are the same as well. Relays, ignition switch, light switch, but the main ones that won't swap are cruise and a/c ccu/temp control/blower control. I had a bad overvoltage relay in my 84 SD, same unit in the D, swapped 'em and got my tach working. Not many vacuum pods are the same either (I'd bet some are but not sure). Radiator/oil cooler will swap, but though the 82SD I bought had a different radiator top - don't know if it was original though. A/C condenser will be different. Very little similarity in interiors, though some parts are common - overhead lights are the same, but that's all I can think of. Glow plug relay is same, antenna is same as far as I recall.

If you're looking for engine mechanical/electrical, it's a good bet. If you're looking for trim upgrades, look elsewhere.

If I remember correctly... The 85 has several transmission upgrades to improve shifting. I have read about it on this forum and others. But, you would need to remove and plumb in the vacuum transducer and a few other vacuum lines. Not too bad though.

Definitely grab the rear end and axles (and speedo) if they were not damaged in the collision. Especially with those miles.
