I had the same experience using the 0-40 in my TDI (another engine it is specifically approved for). I only use 5w40 now.

That's odd, as the 0w only matters at cold. Once the engine warms up 0w40 and 5w40 shouldn't behave any differently.

Often the oil companies dont bother testing every oil against every spec unless they want to get more $$ for it.
I know some of the latest little gassers from Korea use 5w50 oil all year as they have very small oil galleries in the motor and so need the oil to flow well at low temps.

I live in Amarillo, TX. We are closer to the state capitols of five other states than we are to our own in Austin. Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and even Wyoming.....

It gets very cold here. A few weeks ago we were in the single digits F.

We get all four seasons and the extremes within those seasons as well.

The weather is the best thing about this place.

The wind is the worst....but a lot of people are making money converting that into electricity.

As I understand it there is some range in the weight measurement... the 0w40 oil is just heavy enough to be a 40 weight, whereas the 5w40 is well into the 40 weight range.

Actually, if you look up the viscosity of each at 100C on the mobil 1 site, they are very close. I was surprised, but I'm still not going to use 0W40 in my 61x engines.

I ran 0-40 in my car for a winter- it made cold starts real easy. but i got a block heater installed now and only use 5-40 year 'round.
