injection pumps differences?

i have read that the injection pumps on the 617 engines are different on certain years,i beleive i read the ones made in the seventies are different than say the one on my 83 123 model.

if this is true is thier a way to visualy tell if the injection pump is not the later model?

You are not saying if it is a 240D or a 300D; what model are you speaking of.

Some of the older non-turbo 300Ds have Fuel Injection Pumps with Pneumatic Governors; you would have a Butter Fly Valve in the Intake Manifold as well as a bunch of Linkages going to the Intake Manifold and a Vacuum Line going to the rear of Fuel Injection Pump.

On your 83 if it was a 300D US model (with turbochargers) it would most likely have a MW Fuel Injection pump shown in the first pic. The Fuel Injection pump has the Rack Damper Screw on it.
Non-turboed models do not have the Rack Damper Screw.

In the 2nd pic is the type M Pump. I am not clear if it is just some US models have the one in the 2nd pic or it is only Euro models that have the M type Fuel Injection Pump.

Hope someone else will fill in the other details; as this is as much as I can remember from reading on this Forum.

There is a tag somewhere on the Fuel Injection Pump that has the Bosch Numbers and the Mercedes Part numbers.

The nonturbos have the round ADA on top instead of the square ALDA.

i thought the 617 code was the turbo diesel engine found in the 123 body.
that is what i am referring to.
i want to know what year the injection pumps are different and what also what year they are different on the n/a 5cylinder diesels.

i would also like to know if i could use the 5cyl n/a injection pump on a turbo motor or are the delivery valves different?

thank you

A 1977-80 300Ds will have a 617.912 Engine with no Turbocharger.
To the best of my knowlege US 300D models from 82-85 have a 617.952 Turbocharged Engine.

These guys that post in the below section know more about that stuff inside of the Fuel I Jection Pump.
