Rear Hatch Shock Replacement on 87 TD

Anyone know the process on this? I posted this over in Detailing and interiors but have gotten nowhere. I've gotten the headliner down, and the piece of metal that holds the Retention pin bent out of the way, but I cant tell how your supposed to get the shock out or the little pin at the other end of it that holds the shock to the door part.. Any Ideas?

the hinge pins, the ones on the hatch, have locking clips on them... you have to remove them first... then you can push the pins out... they're a tight fit... but its doable... once removed you can remove the bigger pins at the other end... you remove the shocks through the opening on the INSIDE of the car. It'll be easier if you remove the clip holding the wiring harness to the sheet metal for more room... you'll know which ones i'm talking about.

TIP... remove BOTH hinge pins(the ones on the hatch) first before removing the BIGGER pins on the inside... this way there won't be anything pushing on either strut... you can have someone raise the hatch to relieve any pressure on the struts, otherwise those pins will be hard as hell to remove.

when i installed mine i made the mistake of leaving one of the old struts and trying in vain to install the 1st strut... why? because the new strut was apparently longer by a few millimeters. the old strut prevented me from opening the hatch beyond the old strut's length... obviously i couldn't manually compress the brand new one. it took me a while to realize that the hatch opening was being limited by the old strut which was still connected at both ends. After removal everything went smoothly.

moral of the story: disconnect both struts at the hinge first... and have someone hold the hatch for you. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Conclusion of the topic:
I got them replaced, and I hope to never have to do it again. It was a right pain in the lower hind quarters!
