Just about a year ago my '87 300SDL started with a low power situation that just kept getting progressively worse until it would barely move, then stopped running altogether. Turns out it was a plugged catalytic converter. Mine developed the problem at 252,000 miles.

I pulled the cat off and it seemed to help some however I decided to pull the intake manafold off and clean it out. It was full of gunk as well as the ports and the surrounding area around the intake valves. My plan is to try and clean everything up at leasst as much as possible. Any Ideas on things I might be careful of? Any one have an idea on why I would have so much gunk build up?

is the motor fitted with an EGR valve. They have a habbit of causing the inlet system to block up.

Where is it located if it has one? I see something abobe the turbo that looks like an egr valve is that it? or is it somewhere elese? Thanks
