Yesterday, not today
That Global warming has not hit us yet! We were hoping for some and it seems we are being by passed again. Do you think algore could send us some? Well anyway, yesterday at 10 F it fired us very quickly. Today at exactly 0 degree F, nauda, nuts, nothin. Well, I have her plugged in now, hope she fires up this PM. Looks like it is time to keep that heater plugged in.

Its due to the over 70 volcanoe eurutions in 2009.They never explained why so many, two they never counted on ash producing a little ice age.Last time volcanoe did that, there was snow in June in the U.S.

I feel like this is quickly turning into a thread that would best be put in "Open Discussion".
I started my car up last night with the wind chill bringing temps into 3* and 7* ranges! Two full glow cycles really does the trick almost every time. |
I haven't been driving my 240D because of the alternator belt, but I started it the other night when it was around 10, just to see what would happen. It started up easy, one glow cycle, without much cranking ... a little stumbly idle but smoothed out. Not bad considering it wouldn't start at all in 50 degrees before I put the fast glow system in. My 300D has started in as low as -7 F, never used a block heater on either. Those temps are ambient ... keep in mind wind chill doesn't affect a car ... other than the fact that your frozen hands my not be able to turn the key ...
|
18F outside now, but it dropped to below 10F last night. I was just out in the garage, and it's 32F in there without a heater running. No other electrical appliances either, and it's detached so there's no heat from the house. That garage is well-insulated, but I have no idea how it's staying so warm in there.

Here in N. Florida the low for the next few days is about 25 degrees. My 300D started up this moring no problems at all with one 40 second cylce of the glow plugs, i still have the old loop style plugs.
|
Also, solar heating. The roof and walls will collect a significant amount of energy, especially if the building is uninsulated.

Maybe this comment should go in the thread "You know you're obsessed when..." My answer would be "...when you can get under the car b/c there's 6 inches of ice in the way." I figured out a way to wriggle my arm in there though. :) |

I washed the salt off my car when it was 9F yesterday morning......half the car ended up coated with ice, and I could not feel my hands. BUT, I did get the salt off! :D

If I can't find this building I'm gonna move when I get the chance. I'm tired of no space and no heat. |
I changed the oil in Coda today in my unheated, attached garage. I had the door open most of the day.
I'm also on the 5th flush of the cooling system --- I hate getting my hands wet when it's this cold. Dressing in layers and have a thick sheet of cardboard helps a lot. |
What oil was I using
Well i-osprey, it has a nice fresh pan full of Mobil One 5W40 labeled light truck turbo diesel and Suv or something close to that. Glo plugs are three years old, and after starting it this morning at 11 degrees F, it sounded to me like one cylinder is not heating up. It probably took at least a minute to get all five buzzing really nice and healthy, so I will pull them and check them out. It probably needs a valve adjust also, that is close to three years, will be three years this fall. I just purchased the VA wrenches from my good friend Bajaman who sold his little 300D. I hope we continue to hear from Bajaman because he finished at Purdue, PhD in Bio Engineering) and he took a job in Switzerland and I think is in the process of moving the family there right now. And we wish him every success and Blessing in such a big move. For those of you who don't know Bajaman, he was an awesome mechanic with just endless energy, really great wisdom and insight. But as you can see from his "Post" on the Forum, he wasn't a big talker and in his post went directly to the point.

I dont know whats worse!! Its going to be over 100F down here in Northern Vic Australia by the end of the week. Wont be a day to be working on the car. Any tools left in the sun are too hot to pick up after 10 minutes. We are getting the global warming meant for every other place !! LOL
|
We know what you mean
One Hundred degrees F is to hot for a lot of things. Fifteen degree F and less is too cold for anybody to do good mechanical work. We have spring break coming up first of April for two weeks. That and the month of June are my times to get things done. Outside of those time periods the only thing that gets done is emergency work. I can't wait for some kind of warming. And all this continued squalling on global warming. Did you ever hear of anyone moving to the "tundra", just to be more comfortable. No, everybody I know wants to move to Florida, Arizona, Texas and Georgia. Weren't we all taught that 1000's and 1000's years ago all of North American was covered with a great sheet of ice 1000's of feet thick. Looks like global warming was working back in those days also. And it worked real good!

oldsinner,
I am sure you would be most welcome!! Would be good if you could bring 20" a year of rain with you !!! Jim, Down here many are moving to the mid north coast, temperate climate and no extreme temps. Here we get 110f max in summer , 25f min in winter, to much variation, 50 to 85 would be better. |
...50 to 85 would be better.
You just described Seattle. :P Maybe a little colder than 50 on average but not much. It's the rain..THE RAIN  Make it stop!
