yippee! got a new (to me ) engine & trans

After a couple of years, I finally found an engine and tranny for my 300SD.

Special thanks to Charmalu for finding it AND helping me pull it from a PNP.

Car had 156K, hit in rear. I just did a cold compression test, all cyls between 320 and 380, timing chain stretch is 4 degrees. Valves were all in spec if a little loose. There is evidence that oil changes were regular enough, it was clean under the valve cover. ALDA was not touched.

For anyone needing some dark blue seats, they were in the car as of a week ago and these were REALLY nice. The car is a silver '84 300D at the PNP on Commercial Street in San Jose. It's right against the back fence.

Once again, hats off to you, Charmalu, for your help.

Best Wishes,
Nate

Years? It only took me a few weeks when I was looking for an engine, and later, a trans.

Good luck on the swap though! Get that car back on the road!

yeah,
I wanted to get one sooner, but a 600 mile/week commute doesn't let you do much outside of work during the week and we're in the middle of a remodel....

You pulled an engine from a 300D to put in a 300SD? A non-turbo engine where you had a turbo engine?

Please note: engine pulled from an 84 300D which clearly makes it a turbo. No "T" necessary......

thanks, Jimmy L, saved me the effort to 'splain. (see my sig?)

For those who have done this swap before, Is there anything I need to swap over onto the new engine besides the oil filter housing and the oil pressure sender?

Nate, I'm appalled!!!
Aren't the engine mount arms different?

^^^ yes engine mounts arms are different.

Along with the oil filter housing swap, the oil cooler lines are different and a/c lines are routed differently.

Compression is good for it being cold. Looks like you got a great motor there.

oops yeah,

I forgot about the engine mount arms--they are different and A/C lines definitely are different.
I have the complete donor engine, it started making some nasty noises that indicate a wrist pin or a broken piston/ring/who knows what. Compression on # 3 was 200 when the others were 320-380. It still ran the last time I started it, but for now it's just a rebuildable core.

I already bought new oil cooler lines and flex disks, and intend to replace all the usual leaky gaskets and turbo drain seals before I install it.

More to follow, not sure when. House takes precedence over car as long as my 300D is still running, and it's running well.

Thanks Nate glad I could have helped you, call anytime.

That is some good numbers with a cold check. should come up when warm.
I knew there was a Diamond ready to sparkle under that grease and grime.

A complete engine, flywheel forward, all components, $257.00 out the door at PNP. Transmission are about $149.

2 1/2 yrs ago I asked the price for a 617 at Silver Star recycling in Sacramento. they quoted me $800 for an 83, then told me it wouldn`t fit my Calif 85. told the guy "BS" the long blocks are all the same.

So I showed him, I bought one at Metric Motors for $6000. now Iam good for the next 400,000 mi.

Anyone know where I can find a W115 220D engine or 240D engine? My wife bought me a new looking, all original 1971 220D. The previous owner told me that the engine has a knock that is considerable louder than standard diesel clatter. I have not had time yet to diagnose the problem but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. If it turns out to be internal engine damage of some sort than I will be needing a good used replacement. Thanks.
