Not sure if this is in the right forum or not -

I live in Florida and it has gotten cold here as of late - While driving yesterday the outside temp was @ 39 degrees and the EC light was lit up on the control panel that does the air / heat. Have never noticed it come on by itself before. I know that when the light is lit it means that the A/C compressor is turned off. When the button is pushed it doesn't turn the light off. Is this normal when it is cold out? or is it an indication of a failure?

The car is a 1999 E300 Turbo diesel with 148,000 miles.
