That's the idea. My dad bought this car new when I was 5 ... it's been a part of a lot of my best memories and helped me get through some of my worst. I know that's cheesy, and it's just a car, but it's something I would like to keep as a part of my life in some way as long as possible. Honestly, if someone walked up my driveway tomorrow and offered me $30,000 for it, I'd say no without having to think about it. Crazy? Yeah ... but I can think of weirder obsessions.

I know the car has had some rear suspension work done and had a lot of front suspension work done right before my dad gave it to me (in 2002). I'd have to check my paperwork to recall just what. The diff bushings were not a part of it from what I can see. I will check the rear wheel carrier support bushings.

I took a look back there and it's a little shabby all-round. It's not as bad as the components in your "before" photos on your Web site ... but it's definitely not particularly pretty. The diff mounts are the only thing that really make me cringe. I don't think I'm quite competent enough to drop out the whole rear like you did. Maybe I'll brave up if I get a garage that's a little, uh, friendlier, this spring.
So far I'm not getting far because I'm apparently not bright enough to remove exhaust hangers.

Ahhhh... now that makes sense. I can understand wanting to keep a family car, especially if it has sentimental value. Now if it was just a car you had bought from John Doe a few years ago, I'd say cut your losses and trade it out. But in your case, yep, I'd probably keep it too. Although, if someone offered me $30k... I'd at least have to think about it! (That would buy a really nice CDI or BlueTec!!! )

It's not just you. Exhaust hangers are a real nuisance to R&R, even on a lift, and particularly if the exhaust components don't line up exactly correct. The usual drill is to use multiple screwdrivers and muscle things around as needed. A second pair of hands is very helpful. The rubber rings are cheap, replace any that are cracked or stretched.

Ah good to know ... I thought maybe there was a magic method ... I tried a couple of screwdrivers, but gave up temporarily to take the car back out of the garage and clean the garage ... there's only so much of lying in a pile of dirty leaves, newspapers and dust with my feet knocking over boards and old window panes I can take. Cleaning the garage is a project in itself.
