87 190d smoking

this car has 130k on clock,my ex wife has had it for 2 years,i believe mileage fromm shape of interior and exterior, but it smokes a good deal of blue on acceleration, has good power, starts easily in cold weather.im assuming either rings or valve guides-how to diagnose or any other possibilities, would injectors be a possibiltiy?

Does the car require adding oil between changes? If so how much? Or do you already know? If you have visable excessive smoke verify it is the base oil being consumed this way first.

I feel if consumption is less than a quart per 1000 miles normally you would not see it. This is just a guess by me milage wise but typical on older 616 and 617 engines.

Yours on the otherhand seems to be smoking abnormally only on acceleration so the oil consumption information may not have much validity.

Excess fuel should be black. If your air filter were never serviced your engine could easily generate black smoke. Also have a look around the first port of the exhaust manifold. Any oil seepage?

I suspect the oil passage problem is not present because of the color of your smoke. What does the emmision from the tailpipe look like with the engine warm and ideling? Fairly clean? At this time of year with condensation it is a little more difficult to tell sometimes. It might help for you to follow the car and observe from the back exactly what is occuring if anything when normally driving.

Just in my opinion there may be a few possibilities as well. A badly worn engine for example normally smokes all the time. Maybe a little more on acceleration. Valve seals causing an extreme amount of smoke? Since I do not own or know a lot about your engine type others will have to say. I suspect not though.

The colour I believe is right for any residual oil collecting in the tubo because of seal leakage to be picked up and burnt during acceleration. The normally small leakage would not be too noticeable. Until the turbo started to build real pressure and scavanged all the residual oil into the intake manifold. This is actually about the first place I would have a look by your description.

In fact I would remove the rubber turbo boot and look for any evidence of leaking turbo seals. The archives may help you here. If you were to find a small pool of oil in there would be about as cheap as this problem could be. I have to allow that you may have the california only set up on board. I do not know if the turbo boot is the same as the federal version.

Smoking 190D

My 87 190d does the same thing, I suspect valve stem seals and possibly rings. I have seen a number of posts regarding this issue particularly in 87 190D's. I doubt the problem is fuel as the smoke smells like blowby/burnt oil not fuel. It is a pain to fix as it requires lots of underhood time to pull the head, timing chain system and the pan. I have a spare motor that I am going to do all this to then swap it in. Easier in my opinion to fix out of the car. Cheers Dan

I’m afraid I don’t have much to comment about your issue. Other then I use to have that problem on my car, and it turned out to be just worn out injectors. I had my rebuild and pop tested and the smoke went down quite noticeably.

I do have a question, if it is a ring problem would it help him to do the trannie fluid / seafoam treatment of pouring it in the cylinders and allow it to suck for a couple of days. Would that help him free up the rings? Once you let it set for a couple of days you could suck it out, do the oil /filter change and be on your way.

Well a quart every 1400 miles is not bad enough for concern in my opinion. If there are some oil leaks present even better. Not untypical of a mid life engine in my opinion. Others will disagree as some do better.

Well to the other stuff. If real unquestionable proof of total milage is not present or available with any older mercedes. It has to remain in doubt. I have at least two examples that I suspect the indicated milage might be correct. Yet would never bet it was without absolute proof.

On that basis it may indeed do no harm to pull the injectors and have them tested. Chain stretch should also be found and timing quick checked. Retarded ignition can create smoke.

This is not expensive. Really just overdue maintenance usually not done. If they are fine great. If not the reconditioning of the injectors will cost something. At least one of our members does them as well at present.

If new nozzles are required do some research in our archives. All currently available nozzles are far from equal. Usually if the injectors are pretty bad the fuel milage may be lower as well. That may be pretty subjective again though.

At least from your oil consumption figure posted the engine is not a spring chicken but still far from worn out. Some of these engines burnt some base oil from new. That is considered benificial in some engines..I seriously doubt internal wear is responsible for your issue.

thanks for all the replies, car does have significant blowby ,i assume some engine wear, but am not willing to do rings and guides, but injector r+r as well as timing and chain stretch checks are a easy beginning.the shame of it is that the body ,interior ,trans ,rubber and all instruments and ac are in very good condition.the only other issue is belt tensioner is worn out ,makes noise at low rpms, how hard is it to change out?

following up on smoking issue.i checked crankcase breather hose and found it gunked up.i cleaned and engine produced significantly less smoke, cap on valve cover stopped being a tea kettle, also alda on this car is completely accessible, slightly leaned out fuel ,i think this car was not maintained well as far as airfilters.hopefully tings will be ok now,car has lots of power as it should with 130k.i will try to post pics as it is in almost perfect shape, only item left is new starter motor, its beginning to fail.

Well at least you may get a break with the starter motor. I see new ones on ebay for reasonable money. Not rebuilts. Not available for the majority of cars below 1986 that most members have.

Also good you found the restricted crankcase vent line. Oil consumption may further drop with the base pressure reduced. Good thinking. By posting what you located other members may benifit over time.
