'93 W124 300D Transmission Question

I have had some strange issues with my transmission lately but they are likely just the same problem I've had for a while getting worse.

Yesterday, I was pulling out of a parking lot and the car acted like it was in neutral all the sudden.

It was in gear but wouldn't move.

I put it in neutral and the lower gears a few times and it started to move.

This is basically what's been happening for a few months now but never to the degree that the car wouldn't move. Until yesterday it just seemed like the transmission was slipping in first when I gave it medium to high amounts of accelerator and it shifts way too early from first to second.

My question is whether this is a "rebuildable offense" or is there something less tragic at work?

What's all this talk about a B2 piston? Does it apply to this car?

The refusal to move yesterday only happened once and it was very brief but I suspect it is what I can expect to happen much more often if I don't get it fixed.

I cant offer you any help but i will watch this thread as i think i am having similar symptoms on rare occasions when i start from a red light i get a shudder and the car does not move as quickly as expected.Of course when it happens it just a reaction to let off on it quick then when i step on it again it seems normal!
This has been going on for a long while and does not happen often sometimes it goes a month or more without doing it and a couple of times did it twice in a day, only happens when well warmed up,never less than 15 miles from home. Did yours have similar systems previously? Don

I am not having these troubles but I am planning to install a shift kit this summer and begin using synthetic fluid in mine.

You might just be having piston issues.

One possability -- low trans pressure < could be caused by the filter in the pan has and is becoming clogged and this causes the unit to starve for oil supply - bands and clutches have and will continue to shed media as they age --- Normal

also check the oil level -- that simple thing can cause this if its low

But just maybe a trans service will help it out --MB transmissions have a thing with being clean to operate correctly - before trying anything else this i would do - jz

Have you replaced/checked the shift bushings? I thought my transmission went out. It was the bushings they were non-existent. Stick with the simple stuff first....

You mean the shift bushing on the shift lever in the propeller shaft tunnel?

See this post with pictures of bushings. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/243638-w124-shift-lever-bushings.html?highlight=bushing
Keep us updated.

I have considered this as I have another issue I didn't mention.

I will get a metallic rattling at times and it goes away when I push the shifter forward against the gate. At first I thought it was aluminum cans rattling against each other in the passenger footwell.

I bought one bushing a while back but I don't have the slightest idea where it goes. It is a clear, round thing will several(few?) recesses around the outer rim.

I also have purchased a transmission mount that I haven't installed because there is come kind of a harmonic balancer looking thing around the drive shaft right where I need to put a wrench/socket to get to top bolt off. The balancer thing is a steel ring with a black rubber interior like what is on motor/transmission mounts where it attaches to the drive shaft. The rubber looks very cracked and I doubt it's doing what it was intended to do.

The oil level looks fine.

Will do.

I think that I only ordered one of those a while back.

I'll double check and get this fixed as soon as the weather permits.

Global Warming my A$$!

"I will get a metallic rattling at times and it goes away when I push the shifter forward against the gate. At first I thought it was aluminum cans rattling against each other in the passenger footwell."

This sounds like a loose linkage or missing bush, as mentioned by bobo.
If wiggling the leaver helps get drive when it gives the impression its in neutral, then its likely there is a bush/linkage adjustment issue.
You havent suggested any thing that would sound like the trans is in need of a rebuild just yet!!
