Waste gate hose question

After searching I've found that the waste gate hose can be a brittle, easily damaged hose after 25+ years of service.

In swapping out gaskets in the intake elbow, I've noticed that mine was cracked & weepy, so I picked up what I thought to be the replacement part from my local worldpac distrib today. MB# 000 098 07 83. Says to be a 292mm hose.

I go to pull the old one off, which I immediately notice is of smaller diameter and longer length. It is also clamped using one-time use crimped hose clamps.

I pull it off and indeed the old one is longer and smaller diameter. The new one is quite thick and the ID is much to large for the small nipples on the turbo & waste gate. It doesn't reach end-end very well either.

Taking a look at EPCNet, I see there are several part numbers listed for this hose and I'm thinking the one I need is 000 098 14 83.

I can slip the old one back on (that's how degraded the hose ends are) and should be able to run for another day. I'll call the distrib and see if we can compare the two hoses hand in hand tomorrow.

The kicker: The one-time use clamps have a VW emblem on them. And I'm not even 75% sure this isn't fuel hose (which I've heard many use as a replacement). Possible that a indy mech with VW parts repaired this at a previous time? Highly probable...

The proper hose is made of silicone and costs like $17+

No wonder they are brittle!!!

I suspect that silicone would be a much better hose material.

The hose on my 300SD appears to be silicone, but it's also too long for the location and has been rubbing on the tube that connects the air filter to the turbo.

Make sure you check the length and what rubs on, so you don't end up needing to replace it again in short order.

So with a damaged old hose back on the waste gate, I gingerly drove to work this morning.

Heard the turbo whine the whole way... Made me nervous. New hose will be installed tonight. EPCNet was clear that the 000 098 14 83 hose was specifically for my turbo part# (which took me some time to check as the tag on it was very hard to read)...

Well, quick update. The 000 098 14 83 part is not available through aftermarket. Everything keeps pointing back to the 000 098 07 83 part.

Called MB dealer, they only have 4 in country and they're checking on why there is a 'block' on the part...

I'm starting to think that fuel line with foil might be the way to go.
