Help me out here, what to do with my old fluids?

I am not sure what to do with my old antifreeze, brake fluid, and tranny fluid. I can give my old engine oil to a recycle center, but they do not take the other fluids. I hate the idea of throwing them out.

Any thoughts? If it matters I live in Colorado.

Check your local Auto parts store, Some of them offer a recycling program for car Fluids, Also Check with your local Junk yard. it's possible they would take it from you for a small Disposal fee. if neither of those places have it then check in the Phone book under waste disposal, there should be a few listed

Here the "waste transfer station" takes them. and recycles them. They do it for free.

Depending on your local municpality you may be able to dump the anti freeze into your drains. When I lived in the city of Erie the waste water treatment plant was able to process it and make it safe.

Oddly enough they just wanted me to call and let them know if I was going to do that.

Sanitary drains, not storm drains.

If you heat your home with wood, the tranny fluid will burn. Probably even make it easier to light the woodstove off a few times if you make it last.

I mix all my oilies (atf, brake, engine, dirty fuel) and throw in in the waste oil container at my local dump. Look it up on your town or city's website. I had to go two towns over and pay a fee to get rid of the anti freeze.

Brake fluid is not an "oilie." It's much more like antifreeze than oil.

oldsinner, how do you get the dogs to drink it??

When we were younger, we used to use old brake fluid to make smoke bombs. Just mix it with hypo (dry swimming pool chlorine) & it goes off well. no matches needed.

Seriously, the quantity of brake fluid you are disposing of would be insignificant in the waste oil recycle system. I am sure they handle all manner of impurities.

Autozone here takes conventional oil and transmission fluid. Will not take diesel oil or other fluids. City recycling center takes antifreeze and conventional oil. Will not take any other fluids including diesel oil. They were shut down for awhile because somebody put some unwanted fluids in the tank. Now the tank is locked and you leave your conventional oil or antifreeze in its container.

Thanks Craig, I never thought about a municipal waste dump. There is one not too far from me. One point of note:

Will not accept radioactive waste, infectious or biological waste, explosives, water reactive chemicals, large compressed gas cylinders, or appliances.

Good to know that I cannot dump my radioactive waste there.
