Clutch Bleeding Nightmare

I recently replaced the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder. This was the first thing I've done to a car aside from oil changes and tires. I read and did everything correctly on how to bleed the clutch system and it worked, however, my brakes go all the way to the floor now.

When the car is off I can pump pressure into the brakes, but when I turn the car on I have to push the brakes all the way to the floor to come to a slow stop.

I'm assuming I somehow pushed air from the clutch system into the brakes, but I have no idea. My fluid levels are fine and before I put the cylinders in the brakes worked with no problems at all.

Please help. I'm not sure what I've done here. THank you.

You probably sucked air into the brake line you used to bleed the system. Try bleeding that side. You may have to bleed the master cylinder also.

Usually introducing air into the brake system is not a problem when clutch bleeding but I would also suggest bleeding the brakes and go from there.

As noted, the "usual" process does not allow air in the brakes when the clutch runs completely dry. Unless, of course, you jacked the car up on one side to get under the car.

The brake reservoir rear compartment has a nipple on the side about a quarter inch above the bottom of the reservoir that feeds the clutch system. The idea is that even if the hose that attaches to the nipple falls off, the brake port at the bottom of the reservoir, is covered with fluid. If, however, you managed to jack the car up on one side, especially the passenger side, and let the brake fluid run out the line (on the driver's side) it is possible that the brake connection to the aft reservoir compartment became uncovered. Actuating the brake in that condition will introduce air into the brakes.

As noted, you should bleed the brakes. Take care not to break the bleed nipples off the calipers. Buy a large container of Castrol LMA GTX brake fluid (Dot 4) or other brand you like, and bleed the whole system. It is recommended to flush the system every two years, so, if you haven't done it yet, it is likely needed anyway.

Good luck,

Jim
