How do I find my engine number?
hey Guys,
Is the engine # on Mercedes engines printed somewhere on the engine? I have an '83 euro wagon, non-turbo, standard trans, and I have no idea which engine is in it- need to order parts! thanks, Randy |
you can run your vin through the russian mercedes club website here http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/ it will tell you your engine and other fun facts about your car.. click on english in the top right corner.

On my 300D it is about in the middle extreme top of the Engine Block right at the line where the head gasket is.
The Diesel Giant site has a pictorial on where it is as well as where your Auto Trans model number is. |
Another alternative, if you have the original owner's manual, your car information, including engine number, may be attached to the inside of the back cover.

Your engine is a 617.912, the engine serial number is stamped into a boss in the engine block; just below the cylinder head/engine block parting line, directly beneath the #5 injector/glow plug -617.912-xx-xxxxxx

If the russian site doesn't work for you go ahead and send your VIN off to the classic car center in california. They can grab you a list of information about your car.
The russian car site doesn't work for my 85 300d so my only option was to contact the classic car center. |
There are at least two Russian sites with VIN look up capabilities
http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb.asp http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng Neither will make any difference if by any chance your engine is not original, nor will any of the other documentation if that is the case. |
Thanks for that other link. Sadly my car still does not work.
Go to this page and send off a request for the options list: http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/#/onlymbMenu/classicCenter/popClassicForm/ |
