early morning starts
I think my car is now suffering from attitude. 85 300sd. It was COLD here about a week ago. Car sits out and block heater does not work. First cold morning car started ok-cranking speed good, died once and restarted and ran ok. Next morning, about same temp, had to keep starter engaged a long time before car actually ran.
Thinking bad glow plugs, replaced all w/ bosch. Next morning (cold), started same way...kinda like winding the engine up with the starter. Glow plug lihg is functioning as it was. Once car is warmed up/driven at all, it starts great. This has continued this am, car will start, but must use starter for a long time. Items recently replaced: turbo (rebuilt unit), got rid of alot of smoke! thermostat (old one sticking open) glow plugs (bench tested before installed) new gold rack pin dampener (have adjusted several times) Not much if any blow by at the valve cover..very little if any oil consumption, and no loss of coolant. I did use some fuel cleaner in the car about two weeks ago. About 1/2 way thru that tank, the idle dropped and ran rough for a little bit and then back to normal. Car does still miss a little at idle, more than it did some time ago from what I remember (shakes hood). Small amount of white(ish) smoke on takeoff from stop, enough to see in rear view. Would next move possibly be injectors? I have NO idea how old these are, car is showing 205k, rumored to have been rebuilt at 158k. Suggestions are greatly appreciated! Interior is basically re-done..outside is waiting for spring (pictures to follow). Thanks! Last edited by mhin1956; 01-18-2010 at 12:02 PM. Reason: more info - no blow by |

Confirm you are getting voltage to the plugs and do a compression test.

If you're like me and you don't have the tools or time time to a valve adjustment (I'm in school) then consider doing multiple glow cycles.
When you go to start count to 25 after the light goes off then repeat. Try starting that way.

Define cold. A reasonably healthy 617 should be able to start down to close to 0F without being plugged in and fire in a matter of a second or two of cranking.
What weight oil are you running? 5w40 would help. I also 2nd the valves. And do let the glow plug relay run fully before trying to start (a little over 30 seconds). Some even do double glows.

I'd say do the valves, as well. But if you're stuck, the 2x glow plug cycle will also help.
Try once, let the light go out and wait...and wait...and wait. If it's quiet, you'll hear a solid click from the GP relay as it shuts off. 25-45 seconds is long time just sitting there. Then try again. The click will be there, but you might have to open the hood to verify. The click signifies that the safety timer has reached its limit after the GP has reached its full operating temp. |

THANKS to all; problem solved!
Ok, so I bit the bullet last night and got a shop light out to car. Tested all leads from wire plug to glow plugs; all good. Tested 12v supply;had 12+ on either side of fuse strip. Threw wife in car to turn key. Light on dash works, so next was to test output of relay. DEAD. Hmmm. Pulled relay to clean contacts and inspect. Contacts appeared to be ok. Looked at other relay that I have to see if I can determine where I needed resistance or not. Ater 15 mins of no results, I re-assembled the cover. In the process, I tried to tighten the strip fuse screws..whatya know, they were loose! This allowed minimal current to pass to relay for light on dash, but as soon as the contact was made inside relay, not enough current to glow plugs. This am car started on 1st revolution - SUCCESS!!
May want to check screws on fuse for glow plug relays! |
