does any one us oil additives ?
does any one use oil additives like z max , slick 50 or so on , on there diesel ?
|
I dont trust that stuff, just use oil.

I would try to locate someone who owns a commercial fleet of Vehicles and ask them if they use Oil addatives in their Diesels.
My guess is they will say no. The exception might be the companies that are using 0.5 micron by-pass Oil Systems and are doing extended Oil change intervals. They may put in an addative to replace depleted addatives or in some cases the addatives are built into the filter it self. The commercial users of Diesels are the ones who know what will save them money and what would not. Meaning they also know what does not work. |
I agree with the others!! We have never used additives & unless the engine manufacturer or oil co tells us to wo wont be. I think slick50 got into trouble a few years ago.
our motors are too important to be putting snake oil in!!!! |
If you use anything other than a straight weight you are using additives anyway...
Since the makers of small air cooled gas engines say use only straight 30 wt I only use straight weight oils... I used Slick 50 for several years in small gas engines... and the one that took the most abuse and lasted the longest had Slick 50 in it...... added to the 30 wt...it always had some in it... it was a Briggs and Stratton .... we mowed five acres of grass in Texas heat for years with it.... and I finally gave it to a friend who needed it for his mower... the rest of the mower had fallen apart.. I was changing to Gravely walking tractors anyway.... I know they say it does not help... I do think for sure the Slick 50 Gear Lube stopped the whine in two different rear axles... I know nothing else was done to them... and they were getting louder over a six month period... within a month they were back to normal sound... both had over 200 K on them when they started making the noise.. |
do no use additives in your motor oil.

I use additives for my fuel, though. Cetane booster and injector cleaner. |
Nothing but motor oil gets poured into my crankcase.

I USED SOME LUCAS OIL ADDITIVE ONCE OR TWICE THEN IT SEEMED TO KNOCK A BIT AND IT HELPED OUT CONSIDERABLY. i'M IN THE SOUTH WHERE IT IS HOT MOST OF THE TIME AND USE ONLY "CASTROL 20/50 " AND HAVE FOR 35 YRS NOW. CANT MISS WITH IT DOWN HERE.

I do in winter only.I replace on quart of 15w40 with Marvel Mystery Oil,for 18 degrees and below.

Ok the verdict is out no additives
Thanks for the replies |
I have used lucas products in all my diesels. the over the road trucks both went over a million miles with out an oil related problem. My 99 detroit diesel has 1.4 million on it and still going strong.

I've used the Lucas oil additive in all my engines (gas and diesel) for years and feel that it is a good thing. Not sure how they would have performed otherwise but I've seen no problems at all. When I bought my 300D, the PO said it might use a little oil. Changed oil and added Lucas and never have to add any oil between changes.

instead of using foaming lucas, just use thicker oil from the start.
