MB Workshop Paperwork or "Dogtags"?

I am the proud owner of an 84 300D that my grandparents bought new while on vacation in Germany. They ordered it from the factory and drove it around Germany for a month visiting the various places my grandfather was stationed while in the army. It has never left our family and now has 115K on the clock. It has a MB Workshop sheet that lists all of the vehicle codes along with a stamped piece of metal that looks like a dogtag with my grandmothers name and the vehicle VIN#, etc. I was wondering if anyone else has this type of paperwork or "credentials" as I call them? Was this a normal practice when buying a vehicle in Stuttgart? Where can I find a list of the codes to translate my cars accessories? I always enjoy reading about this type of info on the forum!

I had them too when I foolishly threw it all out with all of the receipts from the previous work (did it before I joined this forum).

Yes i'm stupid. I've been living with this mistake for months.

I do still have the options sheet with the option codes on it.

Yep, have all that stuff too. The metal plate wasn't an MB specific thing. You'll often hear about them on shows like Barrett Jackson, etc.

They were used by mechanics/dealerships, etc., to ensure proper parts, chassis codes, diagnosis, etc. were used for service/repairs/maintenance/parts ordering/etc.

Keep it with the car. Keep the car too.

Yes, I have all that stuff. I came with the car new when I purchased it in Dallas in 1983. I took it to the dealer a few times when new and they would use the metal tag to imprint onto the receipt (still have those, too) using what looked like the old style credit card machine.
