Scraping sound when moving

Hey all,

Does anybody have ideas as to what's wrong with my car? It's my 82 240D 4spd. The problem, which first occurred today: when traveling over 15 mph, i hear a scrape-scrape-scrape sound coming from the rear of the car. As I increase speed, the scrapes increase in frequency (at 20mph, approx 4 scraping sounds per second).

Givens:

-CV joints were shot in previous axle; had both axles replaced with new ones 4 days ago.

-Had a new e-brake spring installed today.

-The scrapes occur regardless of whether the transmission is engaged or not

Sounds like it might have something to do with the ebrake work. Btw, were the 'new' axles new MB axles or rebuilt?

Did you do your axles yourself?

If you have a floor jack, jack up the car and spin the wheel. See if you hear a scrapping sound or have any resistance.

I'm guessing you might have a bent dust shield. When I did my axles they were always in the way and a pain to work around. Crawl under and see if anything looks bent or out of place.

If it's the parking brake then I'm not sure. I do recall a little spiked knob that you can turn to adjust the location of the boot.

I'm typing this on my phone so I can't do a search for you. Try searching for parking brake adjustment and see if anyone has had a similar issue.

Since you just worked on the emergency brake I, too, would suspect something related...BUT, if not, your problem sounds exactly like the symptoms I had when I had a dragging caliper on the rear driver's side wheel.

Hope you get the problem solved...

The problem went away after 24 hours of driving. I talked to my mechanic, and it turns out that when he installed the spring, the e-brake was overtightened (if that's the right word) just a little bit, and driving the car wore the pad down just enough so it doesn't make contact or create friction anymore. No more noise, car is great.
