From what he told me, it was owned by an old dentist, who drove it for 2-3 years, and died. His wife, who could not drive standard, left in the garage for 20+ years before she died. The current owner is a college professer who has lost interest in rebuilding the car. I will get his contact info and see if there is a way to prove the mileage, take a look at the parts, and haggle him a little bit.

With limited funds, and working place ( and time, I assume),
I would stick with a replacement engine as close to what you have as possible. You COULD go to a 5 cyl, but that would require a different driveshaft. You also might want to change the differential for some "taller" gears. Too much work.
Stick with the 240D,

All these cars where sold with a manufactures oil change booklet. These should still be in the dash. They have stickers and information about the oil changes etc up to about 125 thousand miles. Any time a car is represented with very low miles I expect that book to be in the dash kind of verifying it. If the book is absent you can draw your own conclusions.

For example why is a book normally still in use every time the oil is changed missing? If you can somehow legitamatly discredit the milage you can haggle harder and more effectivly usually.

Also a car with this kind of claimed milage in reasonable covered storage conditions should not have required an awful lot of reconditioning or restoration to put back on the road. Things like frozen calipers , belts and hoses, tires should have done it.

That oil change booklet would also show the twenty year inactive component. The oil changes should have stopped about the time the car was put in the garage. Check the pillars and engine compartment for stickers. Unless the radiator hoses seem fresh they should have the original factory clamps on them still.

There are far too many mercedes out there with stories. Perhaps the present owners even tend to believe the stories and pass them on. On the otherhand there is always the chance what he is stating is the truth. Up to you to establish one way or another. All part of the lifelong learning experience.

We also must be aware that we can have rose coloured glasses on what we percieve if the need is there. In this case I would want to believe the story for example. That is just human nature. Objectivity is important. Your principal issue remaining is you want a good used engine at an affordable price. It may be there...

I have a 1982 240D parts car that I no longer need. It has a 130k mile motor. I'm in Detroit so just 4 hrs away. Ping me offline. You could actually drive it back to Toronto if you want/

Stuart,

I saw your pictures and that's a beautiful car. I'd say it's well worth putting a good running engine in!

Thank you, I only wish my parents were a bit more sympathetic to cars.

I have found a 240D in Toronto that I am going to buy for about $600 tomorrow, and will drive it back home, where the mechanic will swap the engines, if I decide not to drive the new one as my own car.

I will send some pictures of the new one if necessary. If the internals are in good shape, it's the interior & electrics that will make or break whether that car is kept or scrapped.

On a side note, if anyone is looking for an '80's 240D with and engine with broken valves, timing chain & camshaft (that's about it with the mechanical problems) with 275,000 km on it, and they live in the Southern Ontario region, or somewhere nearby, I will try to sell the car (whichever one it is) to someone who wants to salvage her. I suspect that it will take a good amount of work to get it going, but would make an excellent parts car if not fixed.

I am also willing to sell the car for parts, I am capable of dismantling most bits that don't weight hundreds of pounds, but I am a busy student, so I would have to remove any wanted parts during the weekend. I will probably start a new thread about it in the forums here.

If I get no buyers, I will throw the broken motor in it, salvage whatever I can, (alternator, lights, maybe seats), and scrap the rest.

Like I said, pictures of the other car will be posted when I bring it back from Toronto tomorrow. Thank you for your help, offerings, and kindness everyone.

I appreciate that you are a busy student. However, you are not as busy as you will be next year, or the year after that. You learn to handle the time management thing better.

Pull the tranny, flywheel, clutch pedal and shifter. Someone with a 617 will pay for the set.

x2. The most free time I ever had for projects was while I was an undergraduate student taking a full time load of courses and working a 20-30 hour part time job.

Another option since this car is so nice is to sell it to a forum member with deeper pockets that might be able to put in a metric motor.

Turns out the other car was a 300D, which has, as you know, the 5 cyl engine, so I'm going with just an engine from a wrecker nearby.

Car should be running by tomorrow.

Make sure you hear that engine run before you buy it. Also, check the compression if you can. As close to 400 per cylinder is fairly optimum. 350 might be acceptable if the price is right.

If I read your name correctly, southern, PA, at that. In fact so far south you can spit into Maryland. Am I right?
