ALMOST as good as class IV Synthetics like Redline.)

Although the Diesel additive packages in Shell's Rotella products are superior
to Mobil's...The Dino Rotella T 15W40 is a non-synthetic [oil+filter every 3k]
AND unfortunately the Synthetic Rotella T 5W40 is substandard to Mobil's
class III synthetics,So [oil+filter every 3k for it too].

I use the Rotella T Synthetic 5W40, But only for 3K miles, MAXIMUM.

Interesting. I need to start reading up the forums on Bob's oil forum. I just don't understand the differences between them.

I just want to be able to do a 5,000 mile oil change and be done with it. That is a nice number to be nestled in for a change and fits perfectly with my driving distances for school.

I'm looking forward to the information.

Most certainly not. My 1986 owners manual specifically states that the oil change interval -- using only 1986 dinosaur oil which is 25 years old technology now -- is 5000 miles. If it was good enough then, it's certainly equally good now and probably better. I run Rotella 15w40 dino 5,000 in both of our Mercedes every single interval.

I run my Rotella Synthetic 5w40 for about 5k between changes since about 95% of my driving is highway. (about 1800 miles a month)

The Oil itself lubes the same but that addatives in the gasser Oil are different.
I had 1 Diesel Car Running and 3 Gassers so I decided to use the same Oil in all of them.
After about 1 year of that I got my Volvo Diesel on the Road again and since I now had 2 Diesels going I went to the Rotella T.

Since 1992 I had use the gasser Oil in the Volvo Diesel till last year (except for th 1 year it sat due to a Fuel Injection Pump leak it has been and still is may daily driver).

Each of my Vehicles only gets driven around 5,000 miles per year and my Oil gets changed about ever 6 months. And, the Volvo does not soote up the Oil like the Mercedes will.

Hey guys I just wanted to post a follow up regarding the oil.

Blackstone said nothing bad about my engine! In fact they recommended that I move up to a 6,000 miles per change. Everything was below average.

Fully synthetic petrol engine oil will have a 'fishy' smell to it after some months of use if that is any help.

Lift the oil cap on any engine that runs fully synthetic and have a sniff and they all smell the same.

It is possible to confuse the smell with it being 'burnt' until you realise it is normal.

Not sure if diesel fully synthetic does the same ???,I could get 2/3rds of a tank of diesel here in the UK for the same price it would cost to do an oil change with fully synthetic so semi synth is the only one I use.

Adam,

Good looking report for a 617! I believe Blackstone will attempt to calculate a soot % for a little more money, which is the important number for the 61x.

From what I've seen on this board & Bob is the oil guy on UOAs (used oil analysis), the 61x's end up soot loading the oil, basically filling it with fine soot particles that the oil can no longer suspend, before the additive pack is worn out, or the oil shears down a grade. I'd still worry about going over 5K for you. Your injectors may be spraying nice and clean, and good long highway runs help though.

I run almost all highway on my 616, and still change dino & synthetic between 3000 &4000. My engine burns oil, and what drains out smells terrible! Big whiff of diesel fumes/soot.

For the 60x folks, I've seen UOAs that seem to say 7500-10000 is a walk in the park with a good filter, but search on that too.

There's an old Mercedes UOA of 616/617 vs 617 turbos that shows wear metal comparison, it's on the board somewhere if you want to compare your UOA.

Thanks for sending off to Blackstone!
