Pneumatic coal dust injection was the initial design intent I think. Pneumatic injection used a lot of power, so net power and efficiency was low. Bosch liquid injection helped diesels take off.

The OM615, 616, 617 where/are used as stationary generator engines around the world = long term idle + long term steady load.
They are/where used in arctic service, and left running for months.

In July 1974 MB set standards once again in the development of diesel technology: the 240 D 3.0 of the 115 series became the world’s first production five-cylinder diesel car.
Its OM 617 engine was designed as a pre-chamber unit with 3-litre displacement; the power plant generated 59 kW (80 hp) at 4000 rpm and had a torque of 17.5 mkg at 2400 rpm.

With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 19.9 seconds and a top speed of 148 km/h, the 240 D 3.0 took the field with these more than respectable performance figures for a compression-ignition engine.
Upon its introduction the saloon proved to be the liveliest, fastest diesel car in the world.
By 1974 five-cylinder diesel engines were already seeing use in trucks and as stationary engines.

The old man is a retired Army officer and Blackhawk IP (not injector pump) and his reaction was, "WHOOO that smells like a different kind of money." BTW it was on my hands and pants but NOT face.

Actually, there are some large marine diesels that DO run backwards.

Don't remember the manufacturers, but there are some direct-drive systems out there where the engine must be reversed to reverse the propellor so the ship/boat can stop.

Never heard of such a thing in auto industry, though......

Any engine can run backwards with the right cams and injector/spark timing. They do it in the marine industry all the time in twin engine setups. The idea however that you can take a standard rotation engine and spin it backwards to get a reverse rotation engine though is the myth. And it's wrong.

The old "Atlas" and "Washingtons" have a top RPM of about 350 RPM and are reversed by stopping the engine, the cam slids fore/aft to the other set of lobes, compressed air then starts the engine in the reverse direction. Running out of compressed air can result a "no more maneuvers left" situation so you better get it tied up without to much fooling around The exposed rockers and push rods must be lubed every watch (4 hours). Those "old "stamp mills" are much more pleasant too be around than the high speed Cats and Jimmys but a real pain to run.

Big qualifier IF it's made that way but the idea that because it runs on diesel fuel, it can 'run backwards' - not true. A neighbor and I were talking about this and I asked him how it would make any oil pressure, then he got it.

How about the myth that ULSD is going to kill our engines?

How about the myth that driving a diesel Mercedes immediately makes the driver more intelligent, more attractive to the opposite sex, and more formidable in business negotiations?

Actually I kinda like that one. Can we make a thread for myths we'd like to start?

I heard that Detroit 2 stroke diesels could run backward...
