But where is the fun in that?

I've been wanting to buy a new head unit with bluetooth A2DP and the handsfree profile. I would love be able to wirelessly stream music and make phone calls over the sound system.

But that is a different discussion for a different thread.
Actually, I have a cheap kenwood head unit (about $250) in my 300d that does a decent job streaming audio and phone calls over Bluetooth.

Sorry about the hyjack.

Actually, it is 5 bolts counting the seatbelt receiver "brace".

Haha the responses here are great; why would you people think I would actually use the laptop while driving? For that matter I won't even be looking at the laptop while driving! I am going to do these responces as best I can in order.

Cheers!

@Craig - Yes all my movies are on the HD but I have a power inverter rated to keep the laptop running on power while driving.

@Aquaticedge - Thank you =)

@Crazy_Nate - Yes and that is always an option (someone elses hands)

@Adam - I am not looking to do anything that will be destructive to the car; removing a bolt from the floor and putting it back on with a mount is a lot less work than cutting up the dash, plus we're talking about using this for a road trip not as a daily thing.

@elchivito - I drive a 1987 300TD, don't you think I got over the 'looking cool' phase after my last VW? Would you say being on your cell phone with headphones or bluetooth is as distracting as being in a conversation with the passenger while driving? I know a few people who will talk to you while driving and LOOK at you more than the road, or at least it seems that way.

@daw_twp - Ok? lol

@MBZ123 - You really didn't have to quote my entire post. =) I own a 27" iMac with the 24" LED Backlit screen too if that makes you cringe? I did desktop support for 4 years on PC's before I started doing web design and development full time -- it is my passion, I absolutely loved working with people and their PC's and now I am pleased to design web sites for a living. Not really understanding how I am going to 'klundge' up my Mercedes, "Just assure us please you won't go permanently modding the lovely innards of your ride." have you even looked at any of the mounts I had listed above? The steels is overkill I agree which is why I am looking at other options but it stands up well and when your driving a Chrysler New Yorker to college and doing home work in the parking lot because the car is more like a sofa on wheels, you don't mind having a steel mounting system. I have the British accent on my Garmin Nuvi because his voice is hilarious but I am not sure if you know this you can turn off the extra assists that tell you to turn in a few miles.

@Charles - You should have taken pictures of that I would have loved to see that!!

@moon161 - That is actually some interesting advice, unfortunately removing or modifying my dash is something that is too destructive to the car but that is interesting to know that is how certain things are mounted for Taxi's and such.

@Craig & Adam - I have a Pioneer headunit that has a 3.5mm jack input in the back that I run a cable to the front and can hook anything with a 3.5mm headphone jack to and pop the unit on AUX and I am set; this includes my beloved dear old iRiver 40GB MP3 player, iPhone, GPS, whatever really... It's pretty useful

I recently updated the nav system in my SD. I went out and bought a new Gazetteer for TN which is a topo of the entire state and shows most of the new roads. I'm tempted to throw my cell phone away and don't want my stinkin laptop on in the car. We used to make a shopping list thus avoiding calling home to see what we forgot. We used to look outside to see what the weather is doing. Now we log on. The urge to talk on the phone while taking a dump is also a relatively new phenomenon.

Sometimes the bluetooth does seem to be more trouble than it's worth, I also have a jack that I can use for my iphone but I usually use the bluetooth anyway to avoid having to plug it in.

I do use a stand alone gps unit because I don't want to have to keep switching between maps and audio on the phone. If my kids want to watch movies in the car, they usually just load them on a iphone or ipod touch and use earphones. Somehow my daughter even watches video on a tiny blackberry curve screen.

I usually have a MBP with me, but I don't have any real reason to use it in the car.

Shreaded wheats

@Junkman - I have audiobooks on my Garmin and can put it through the car stereo via the headphone Jack which is great. Lol thanks for the new revolution. Apparently I am a bigger geek than everybody in this forum. =)

@Craig - I don't like talking on the phone while driving but then again I'm the guy in the right lane doing the speed limit laughing at everyone elses antics -- so I don't have to worry about the guy infront of my slamming on his brakes hard because I am usually more than 6 car lengths behind the guy in front.

As for bluetooth my experience is that they are hard to hear (ive had a few) but the iPhone comes with awesome headphones that have a mic. They are perfect for talking on the phone and honesty if I don't have you on speaker phone I probably have the headphones on.

Again the main reason to use the laptop would be to entertain the two passengers.

On my blackberry I have incredible bluetooth performance. The old headsets back in the day really did suck. My bluetooth ht820 headphones rock as a handsfree device.

I don't own a GPS so I can't answer. My blackberry does that though
