Starter wiring

Hi all,

I am a new owner of a '85 300D turbo with ~322k on it and enjoying it. It has some issues that I am tackling but that is why I got rid of the modern gas computer controlled car and got this. Besides I just like the klackity diesel.

Two questions.
One of the PO's did a hack job on the starter setup. To say it is a bit redneck may be nice. They added that button on the console that just switches +12v to the red wire which goes up under the hood. It is tied to a white wire with string weave on it. I do know that if you just hit that wire at any time with 12v it trips the starter. I planned on correcting this when I got it. I was told the keyswitch didn't work. I think they didn't understand how it worked since if I just bump it CW I hear a large relay chunk in under the dash. And under the driver dash the wires look like swiss cheese with probe holes in many of them.

In the "underbatt_tray" picture what is the thing, circled, that looks like a horn? A horn? Odd place for one. The wire are cut off and shown with the arrows just held out of the way using that bushing. The horn does work so there is one connected somewhere.

This forum has been a great help with my lack of heat this winter. My aux pump gets power but does not run. I disconnected it based on scary threads here. I also have the monovalve unplugged for now. When I get a break I have to do a rebuild of it. Reflowed all solder joints in the push button unit for climate control also.

thanks,
Scott

Seems the NSS has failed and there's the PO's answer. Looks like you'll be able to wire it properly again too.
If you have an alarm system, that may be the horn for it. There is a heat shield right there on mine, no alarm.

The White Wire is supposed to go on the same part of the block as the Purple/Lavender wire.
And, it works opposite of what you think. When you Key is in the position to crank the Starter (+) current goes through the White Wire to the Purple/Lavender Wire. That Purple wire goes to the Glow Plug Relay and it keeps your Glow Plugs on while the Starter is Cranking.

The side of the Terminal Block with 2 screws has (+) Voltage all of the time and you can jump start your car there (see the yellow V in the pic).

So that it not too bad of a hack job. Just reconnect the White Wire to where the Purple one is.

Sounds better than I had expected. What is an NSS? Too many new acronyms on the forum for us newbies. As far as an alarm... hmm if there is one in there I don't know about it.

Neutral Safety Switch. Could also be a problem in the ignition switch. Poor connections in the ignition switch are not that uncommon on here.

A true redneck job would just have bare wires to touch together instead of a push button.

Well that might explain the fact it will start in any gear. Which I stumbled upon fixing the aftermarket radio wiring and wondered about. Just turn the key and bump the button with your knee by accident. You are probably right about just wires hanging out too.
