Confused on glow plug upgrade / 1978 240D
Folks,
I'm upgrading my glow plugs from the loop type to the pencil type. I have the instructions in front of me and I think I understand what goes where, but I am not sure what method to use to connect the red and black wires coming off the glow timer included in the kit. Should I connect them at the ignition switch (and if so, how?) or should I connect them to the ports on the plug that attached to the old relay under the driver's kick plate (if so, do I solder them)? It seems many folks have been able to do this upgrade with minimum difficulty, but I have to admit I'm kind of stuck here. Andrew

Andrew ... I did this upgrade on my 78 240D a couple months ago and also found the instructions to be confusing. I did a write up of how I did it: http://savingchase.com/diy-pages/glow-plug-enhancement/
Hope that helps. The new setup works great ... my car's engine is pretty tired but it still starts up quite quickly with the new plugs. With the old ones, I had a hard time starting it even when it was 50 out. With new ones it has started at 10 degrees.

Fantastic
Your write-up answers all of my questions. Thanks a lot! I've gotten it running using the new plugs and the old relay, but I'm rather anxious to swap relays because the old one is doing the Imma-turn-on-whilst-the-car-is-running-causing-the-alternator-belt-to-whine thing.
