valve stem seal replacement dilema

in the middle of this job on my 84 300DT. just completed cylinders 1 and 2. I believe the valve stem seals are seated properly. is there a way (measuring or feel) to know if the stem seals are seated properly? also, there is a title bit of play in the valves. how much is too much play? thanks!

unfortunately, any perceptible play, is too much play.

I knew they were seated by feel, but you could compare the heights of the new seals to the heights of old seals.

This is what I found with a quick look. However, if you Engine is working OK even if the Valves were a little loose I would leave mine alone with the exception of what you did; changing the seals.
Wobble in the Valves may shorten the life of the Valve Stem Seals but I would expect them to last many years.

a very special thanks to everyone who contributed on this forum. without this support network, it would be very difficult to keep these older mercedes running. some of my friends think I am absolutely nuts for driving old benzers.....they are like, "why don't you trade those old cars in for a NEW one??" I'm, like "because the new ones have too many computers....computers belong on your desktop but not in a car" besides, a classic mercedes benz is like an old friend, you know it will get you where you need to go. long live the star!

PS I will provide updates as this job progresses.
