240d injector heat shields - where are mine?

Can someone help me identify what is going on here? I took my injectors out of my '77 240d for replacement. I was expecting to find heat shields that I would need to remove and replace, instead it seems there were never any. Can someone look at the pic below and tell me whether there is a heat shield that needs to come out?

thanks,

It looks like there still is one in there. Insert a pair of needle nose pliers, open, pull out heat shield. Replace with new ones. For reference, here's what it looks like when they're out 616 Injector Nasties.

It looks like the Heat Shield is there but someone put the one in the pic in upside down.

It may have happen because the person did not know which way they were supposed to go. Or, I noticed that when you drop a Heat Shield in on the way down they want to flip ounce or twice before they get to the bottom.

It is better to slide the Heat shield on something like a Screwdriver and stick the Screwdrier down the hole and then let the Heat Shield slide down that. When done get a Flashlight and take a look to be sure they are positioned correctly.

Here's what the chamber looks like cleaned up (all 4 look like this)...

it seems pretty seamless in there, i.e. I can't get anything out and I really don't think there is something that is supposed to come out.

Which leaves me wondering whether there is supposed to be a heatshield in there before I install the new injectors?

Speaking of new injectors, my new injectors look slightly different than the previous injectors, both in the body and maybe even a bit at the nozzle.

Also, when i drop the new heat shield into the prechamber the hole on the heat shield is larger than the bottom of the prechamber.

That would be the 10mm version. There is also a 7.5mm version, which I would recommend over the 10mm. I have seen several cases where the 10mm shields did not seal well; in one case the lip around the hole actually separated. I have had much better luck with the 7.5mm shields.

Ok, but my current problem is trying to figure out whether I still have old heat shields in there or not.

the earlier models did not use the same heat shield setup.

the injector tips sealed against a non-removable element in the pre-chamber.

Honestly, I thought that was before '77 though. If you are truly uncertain after some more investigating, post better pictures for us to see.

I was facing this yesterday, but since I was the last guy to replace the injectors, I knew all the heat shields were there. There is a lot of carbon in the crack and behind the shield sticking it to the prechamber. Take just a little penetrating oil and soak the joint. Scrape around the seal with an awl or small jeweler's screwdriver. I did this and mine still wouldn't budge. So I took a deep socket that fit the prechamber hole almost perfectly and gave it a sharp tap with a hammer. That finally broke the carbon seal. One advantage of using the small 7.5mm seal is there is more of a lip to pry against.

Sometimes you need something like a dental pick to get them out, be careful not to break off the tip of what you're prying with tho

Thanks for all the feedback. I tried picks, screwdriver, etc... without any result. i wasn't willing, however, to throw all my weight behind a screwdriver for fear of damaging something.

I needed the car running last night so i put the new injectors in using the 10mm heat shields that came with injectors. The car started and is running fine, much better than before actually. I'll probably research a bit more and maybe remove them again next weekend.

get a cooking torch and heat it up first and then pry it. those torches are great for heat shrink tubing too!
