Convert used motor into fuel
I was reading about a book that teaches you how to turn used motor oil into fuel. I have six cars and always have used oil around. I also heat with #2 heating oil. I just want to suppliment my fuel a little. Anybody ever done it?

That thread outlines how some people have done it. You'd probably be better off burning it in your home heating oil burner if you filter it correctly. |
Adam is on the money!! WMO is good as a part replacement for heating oil. You can run WMO in your motor if it is filtered & blended with diesel. You are better off with it in your heater though.

engine oil has additives specifically used to prevent it from burning in the combustion chamber. its also nearly half additives, many of which are metals, minerals and non-petro chemicals, none of which burn. |
Eric,
I agree with much of your comment!!! However, you comments about additives may need some clarification. The Paramins used in modern oils do not have all of the properties you describe. EXXON Chemical Co. who have been a substantial producer of these products do not support your claims in their literature. There are requirements that these additives meet standards with respect to combustion residues. You may note that I did not recommend to the OP that he use WMO in his motor. This is despite the fact I have a diesel type stationary engine that is designed to run on waste oil. They were very common at the start of last century. I have even shown it on a thread. With regard to your concerns about metals and minerals, Such things as centane boosters and other fuel additives as well as engine oil are strictly controlled. Many make comments about the burning properties of various hydrocarbons, esters, triglycerides and other organic compounds. My question to those who make such comments is how about qualifying your comments with your professional qualifications in the fields of Combustion Science and Chemical Engineering. I am yet to find any one on this site who is qualified to make the comments that are often made. If you have such professional qualifications, I look forward to a PM from you. There are often ill informed opinions made on very technically complex questions. When alarmist opinions become presented as a technical fact, we need to make sure of the credentials of the person presenting the "fact". Eric, We used to have a politician in Australia called Don Chipp, he was well known for his statement that he was there "To keep the Ba^#@%ds honest !!" I sometimes when reading your posts think that you may have a little in common with him. He was well respected and clearly had his heart in the right place!! |
Diesel fuel itself, causes most lung cancers.I ran alot of wmo,but quit, because its so damaging to children.I run vegetable oils mixed with diesel.Healthy for everyone, and my wallet.

I have a few trucks and collect WMO and when I get a 205l drum I heat it, filter it for 2 days then mix it with Diesel between 15-20%. I alternate between full tanks of Diesel anfd the mix. I used get my oil picked up as I thought it was recycled but I asked the driver and he told me it just gets cleaned and used in the company trucks as fuel.
Plus when you think about there are a lot worse offenders out there that polute more than a few cars running a mix of old oil. Governments and their one sided policies come to mind to protect big business and their financial backing. I'm not into poluting but the bottom line at the moment is to get as much value for money as possible out of everything. Thanks to Government policies. If anyone should be blamed it should be them. I do as I please. It is one of my freedoms and I'm not here to tow the line so to speak. Unfortunately I don't need heating where I am so I have to put the used oil to good use or someone else will use what I paid for. It's all pure economics. |

So others Know, I have sent Eric a PM detailing my qualifications & inviting him to do likewise. I do not expect a reply. |
A friend of mine tried this and loved it for a few tanks and then all of his vehicles started smoking like crazy. So much so that his wife got pulled over in her Excursion because of the cloud. I cant say that he made the fuel 100% right but he has been refining WVO for a few years. I have never seen crazy smoke like that before.

I have written the more complete story in other threads before. Where I worked we serviced the Diesel Generators that powered Refer Units. The company started mixing WMO in with the Diesel Fuel.
The result was Injectors plugged with a white hard crusty substance. They stopped doing it as it was costing more to fix the problems it caused than the saving of burning the WMO. |
I would never do it consistently, but having 2 quarts of used motor oil in my trunk saved me when I ran out of fuel on the shoulder of the I-5 the other day.

I've found 10% amount of wmo as an additive has no detrimental effects and even adds a nice amount of pep via increased btu's. My previous 89 F350 craved it and kept asking for more. Higher ratios can lead to ill effects and poor exhaust smell. |
