Size of fuel tank. '80 300TD

I have searched the archives, and I have plugged in as many different word combinations as I can think of. I'm just not hitting on the right one. I've found sedan tank size, but not the wagon. Read alot of good info on the sending units, though.

Should be about 18.5 gallons. Mind you, the one time I ran mine to empty it filled up with only 17 gallons... beats me where that extra 1.5 is!

The sales brochure I have claims that they hold 15.4 Imperial Gallons (which, as stated above is about 18.5 gallons US) but the most I've EVER packed into in my 83 TD is a shade over 15 gallons.

Out of gas...

I ran out of gas the 2nd day I had the car. Fuel gage was just at a 1/4 of a tank. Filled up with only about 11 gallons. Is it likely I have cloggage in my tank somewhere? I hadn't run anything out of gas in 25 years. Makes a difference when you have cell phones and AAA. Bitter tow-truck driver stopped just a shade short of calling me a total idiot. Had to show him my gage to get him to calm down...

The most I have got in my tank was 16.5 gallons at the filler neck tip. This was with the engine sputtering at 400rpm from lack of fuel.

...and my new aux. tank holds 18 gallons.
34.5 gallons total capacity, about 780 miles range

The tank strainer is probably crudded up and won't allow fuel to flow when it's below a certain level in tank. This could be because of an algae problem.

Do a search on algae and strainer...lots in here on it.

Did you install the huge aux. tank in place of one of your passengers?

Where'd you fit it?

The tank is made for a W123 sedan (Different rear wheel humps ) to fit in the trunk, behind the rear seat. As I said, the TD has different humps, so I had to use spacers to make it fit without cutting up the body or tank. I loose the function of my 3rd seat but I have rarely used it as-is. I still need to seal the main tank filler neck...

When was the last time you cleaned or replaced your pick-up screen in the tank? You could have an inch or two of crap chocking off the screen near the bottom. When this happens, you have fuel in the tank but it can be used below the point of occlusion on the screen.

The screens for the wagons are about $25, different from the sedans...
Try cleaning it with gasoline, replace it if the screen has been broken....

hmmmm, I am filling up with only 13 or so gallons, and I ran out lately and the fill up only took 14ish. the tank looks ok, no deformations in it, but the fuel gauge does not function below 1/4 tank... I am thinking broken top half of tank, crushed or something. odd that the bottom of the tank looks normal. it could be a tank strainer, I do get a lot of crud in the primary filter often...
anybody got any other ideas?
thanks.

replace strainer, and pull and clean the sender- you access it from above- no need to drop the tank. my sender would read 3/16 when it was dry, until I pulled it and cleaned 20+ years of crud from inside it.

yeah, I have a new strainer to go in... I may pull the sender at the same time... I wish the strainer was accessible from the top.

If it was accessible from the top it wouldn't do much straining, would it......
Wow this thread is from a long time ago. We never did much get to the bottom of tank size.

sure it would, it would just need a tube up the top, instead of out the bottom... lots of fuel tanks do it that way... of course that lowers the fuel pressure due to tank pressure, but hey simpler repairs are a good thing too...
yeah, this thread is old, but it's the first one I could find on the size of a TD tank.
