Diesel smell in the cabin
I have a 92 300SD, recently I started to smell diesel fuel fumes inside the cabin. I look around the fuel lines on the injectors (hard lines and return lines), lines are conpleted dry. Also around the the IP and filter. Every thing looks ok, there was a small wet spot at the bottom of the plastic fuel filter, there is a part that I don't know what it is (pic is below) I clean and check all the lines around it for cracks, every thing was in good shape. I need to follow the line from the filter to the gas tank. Can I see the gas tank from the trunk by removing the hasrd carpet? I don't want to remove stuff if I don't need to. Thank you guys again.

I had a similar problem, but with exhaust fumes. Turned out I had an exhaust leak after the turbo allowing fumes to be pulled in by my fan.
Are you sure it is fuel smell and not exhaust smell.

It is common for the O-ring and plastic elbow to go bad, sometimes corrosion eats the housing where the O-ring seals. Check Your Fuel Return Lines
Had a similar problem...turned out to be a fuel return line (near injectors...look for fuel seepage). I replaced them all...no more fuel smell!

The fuel hoses come off the bottom of the tank, under the car. Last edited by whunter; 01-25-2010 at 05:51 PM. |

Its worth having a look around the fuel tank filler. If the rubber seal (65 in Roy's diagram) is loose it will cause the smell.

I've noticed some moisture down there as well. I intend to spray the whole area down with brake parts cleaner before diving in. This will isolate components that are just getting the runoff but it should reveal the real source of the problem.
I am inclined to believe that the hoses should be replaced first before digging into the pre-heater. My 92 looks to have original hoses and those degrade over time due to fuel exposure. steve a
