V10 Mercedes Benz diesel

I went to the annual Thanksgiving "rod" run in Daytona Beach this weekend with the boys and man what a show. I will post on Open Topic some more info. A couple of interesting things that we experienced happened on Sat morning. We went to what was called an "open garage" sale at Smokey Yunick's garage at 957 N. Beach St. - Anyone under 35 may not know who Smokey Yunick is but the rest of us will. Anyway, he passed on earlier this year and his estate is selling everything out of his garage. He had the "best damn garage in town" and we spent a few hours nosing around in there. By far, the most interesting thing I saw (and almost purchased to install in my '83 240D) was a V10 Mercedes Benz diesel engine. The plumbing was not there so I can't say whether it was a turbo or not. This engine was set up on a stand with it own radiator and all and IT WAS BRAND NEW or some people call it "New Old Stock". The numbers on the engine were 403.910.000.015631 and at the rear of the engine another number 403.015.1302/51.01401-3107. Now, I want some of you guys that are really "in the know" on these types of things what this engine was originally intended for. They were asking about $4k for it and I suspect that I would have to change the springs on the front of the 240D to keep it level if I dropped this baby in there. It would probably make an excellent marine engine though. When I left on Saturday afternoon it was still there for sale. I will post a pic as soon as I get them developed.

Can it be a backup generator engine? I've seen some sawmill using them back in Malaysia. But I don't remember what engine number they had..
