Any way to make the blower fan quieter?

My blower fan quit today, so I bought a new one. Is there any way to make the fan quieter before I put this new one in? On the high setting, these are just plain annoying. I wish they'd have come up with a low, medium, and high, rather than that stupid middle switch which is a variable speed. The low is often too low, and high it often too high not to mention noisy.

I wish I could rig this thing to change "variable" to "medium" at least.

ACC

Did the "German" 124's even come with the retarded Automatic climate control? The 123's didn't, though I suppose it was available as an option....

I'm a retro-grouch. I admit it, I prefer manual everything!

The 'base model' 200 series did have manual controls. The 300 series with more option packages had ACC like yours.

Soooo...

So you're saying there's no way to turn the fan into a low, medium, and high, is that correct?

There is low and high......but the middle 3 speeds are controlled automatically depending on the temperature. Mine works correctly. Though when driving 75mph in 3F weather you need it either on speed 5/6 or 6/6.....and even then it barely can keep it comfortable....just not enough heat! That is on the w126 though, the W124 is quite a bit better (stronger) blower.

No, the fan has stepless control.. it's not like the previous system that had 5 different fixed resistance values. Is the auto fan setting not putting it somewhere in the middle?

The "variable" or auto, sucks

No, the auto isn't any good. The problem remains that the low is too low, the high is too high, and the automatic is shifts from low, to medium, to high.

I want MEDIUM, and for it to STAY there. Automatic won't stay in medium, it varies the fan output depending on the temp of the car. I hate that.

can you just adapt the switchgear/controls from a lower-spec car?

Bypass.

You should be able to retrofit your car reasonably easily with a bypass circuit of some sort. A switch, a couple relays and an appropriate resistance coil, you're set.

Ah, I just noticed we are talking about a W124, I thought it was a W123.

Indeed the W124 has stepless control.....my 300E has that. Its pretty cool how it seamlessly ramps up and down though.
