Thumbs up Where to purchase new R4 compressor

Next month or in March, I am going to rebuild the system in my SD once again due to a leaking compressor.

I will be going with a new unit and I will need the stepped port seals, yellow and green I believe from memory. Someone feel free to correct if needed.

In any event, where is the best place to purchase a new unit? Any local auto store? GM dealer?

Per the usual, thanks.

I'm not sure where to get one, but man do I swear by a new Delco R4 compressor. Smash has a fairly new Delco R4 compressor and the AC is far colder than my '85 with the reman. Of course I guess evap condition could play a big part in that.....

HitMan,
I have seen them on fleabay. I guess you could also try phil at fastlane.
If you are doing that much work on the system, wouldnt it be worth looking at a kit for a sd22 or something newer for the new gas?

I have about 50lbs of R12 around, I will not be making the switch anytime soon. If I have these vehicles that far down the line and MUST switch gas, I will decide what to do then.

My R4 worked great with some syn compressor oil until it all leaked out due to a bum compressor. The seals for the housing itself were leaking.

I wish I was closer, i could help you use some of that R12. There is an import ban on bringing it into Australia, its just getting harder & harder to get. Not long ago we regassed 3 systems here on our scraper, dozer & a tractor. We used up the last of a heap of cans we got just before they banned it. The next time it will cost a few $$
Good luck with you repair !!

You may need to fabricate new hoses to use it, but have you considered a Seltec/Sanden rotary? You can find new compressors on ebay for less than $100. I prefer the o-ring fittings but if you are a true believer in the stepped ports I think those are available too.

I bought my new AC Delco R4 compressor from oehq.com, it is $232 with free shipping. The stepped seals were included and I had no trouble with the installation. Works great with R12, my and 300cd cools just as good or better than a modern car.

I bought my Hodyon (Hancock Industires) R-4 at NAPA. It was 3 years ago, and it's still working good.

Can anyone confirm the color the stepped port seals to be used?

The Hodyon came with them. I had to switch out the rubber portion on one of them, and the metal step was thick and the rubber was too thin. I think I noted that when I did the work.

Look at post #17

Even MORE A/C fun...not!

If the compressor is otherwise in good condition, those seals can be replaced. Slide the cover off and look at the inside- seals are available from McMaster-Carr. If it looks good, the new O rings may be worth a try.

I am not sure of the age on the compressor itself, I purchased it a while back and at this point would just assume replace it. New R4s have an updated front seal too.

If anyone wants it for shipping cost + $7 for a sixer of beer for yours truly, you can have this one. Ran fine, cooled fine, etc.

NAPA has them. But you'll need to confirm the rear hose seal design. There are 2 or 3 types.
