240D driveline locknut
I checked my driveline while I was under my car fixing the shifter and found the spline portion very loose. Up and down side to side type of loose .
There is a big nut that seems to lock down on the shaft . I tried to tighten and loosen it but it wont budge. Is there a bushing that goes under this nut or is it supposed to squeeze the outer shaft tighter similar to an adjustable choke on a shotgun ? I used a 24" cresent wrench seems like somethings wrong here. Any Ideas I searched but only came across the different sizes needed for swaps and center bearing u joint repair threads. Thanks in advance .

It sounds as if you have a bad Carrier Bearing.
The carrier bearing is inside the housing that bolts to the bottom of the car. This is sometimes called the Spider, but the correct name is the Carrier Bearing Housing. If you can move the driveshaft around inside the carrier bearing housing then what has happend is this: You carrier bearing has frozen up and torn up your housing. The good news is that the parts to fix this are cheap and the job is easy. The bad part is that it takes forever and you might have to pull the exhaust system to take out the drive shaft. One thing to be aware of is that the driveshaft was balanced as a unit at Mercedes and will need to go back together the same way as it came apart, so mark the relationship of the front shaft to the rear one with paint before you take them apart. Also try not to knock off any of the balance weights. If you do they are easy to replace by just sticking them back on with super-glue. Do some research on how to replace the carrier bearing housing and bearing on your car as there is a bit of difference between the 115 and 123 versions. |

Thanks for the reply Pooka
The carrier bearing was shot when I bought the car . It was replaced soon after. the nut I'm talking about is where the drive shaft slips together . It has splines male on the inner shaft and female on the outer shaft the nut attaches to the outer one. Between the two is where the play is. I wish I knew the technical term for it.

I think I know what you're talking about.
Is there lateral play? (sliding the driveshaft from the front to the back of the car? If so this should be normal, the splines act as a slip joint to allow for movement that happens in our lovely unibody beasts. |

As you tighten down on the nut, it squeezes the shaft to the splines. it isn`t on very tight. Use a large pair of channel locks to remove it.
Most I have removed, the nut loosens pretty easy, I had one a couple weeks ago on a 240 that wouldn`t. I needed the front half only. once I had it off the trans, I tapped it off with a hammer. the splines were rusty. Charlie

Is there a point where it just doesnt tighten up any more and you consider it worn out Or does it compensate for the wear as long as the splines are still intact ? Nick The best way I can describe the wear would be similar to a loose wheel bearing kind of a rocking movement. Thanks for the replies Time to try them out . ITS HAMMER TIME !!!!

I knew the nut was 46mm, I didn`t know the other was 41mm. I have been looking for a wrench for a while. what is the SAE size?
If the trans is in gear and the parking brake is on, only need the 46mm. sometimes in the Junk Yard, we don`t have those luxuries. Charlie
