these MB can fly..

Diamond aircraft is using MB turbo diesels in their small twin. Pretty cool idea. They are car engines with different fuel controls.

What engine is it based on? I can't tell. All I can see is that it's not a hopped up 616.

I've flown one of the DA-42's when they first came out. It's a fantastic little airplane, despite the engine troubles. We flew it on one engine, and it did great.

WVO does not work (nor does pure Biodiesel) in the new CDI type engines. WVO turns to muck at 22,000+ psi. That's one of the things I like about the new diesels, they cannot run WVO. So no one can ruin them with a slow death!

A lower pressure than that will cause WVO or Bio to polymerize under the right conditions. Thats what the varnish is that is often spoken about.

I wonder why they use diesel engines. Why not spark-ignition? Higher power-to-weight ratio. Maybe the fuel efficiency negates that?

Will they run on jet fuel??? I don't know of an airport that has a diesel pump?? What would jet fuel do to our diesels? I know that they will run it but for how long?

AFAIK, aviation gasoline, or 100LL as it is sometimes called, is peculiar to aviation engines only. Jet fuel is common at any airport, and has a wide variety of other uses. Additionally, general aviation engines are still using 1950's technology- points, magnetos, and carburetors with mixture controls, and it is important to monitor mixture and EGT. The move to diesel offers single lever power control, as well as a safer fuel.

I was trying to figure out how they got off the ground with the weight. They toss the cast iron crankcase and make their own using mercedes internals. I wonder how that would run in one of our older cars 170hp and lighter weight.

Sure would drop the 0-60 time.

The Germans had diesel aircraft in WWII- The Junkers Jumo had an opposed piston diesel engine with two crankshafts, similar to a Fairbanks-Morse OP engine.
