So the 190D also was available with a 2.5L turbo known as the OM 602? What is the difference between a 190D and a 300D w124 body?

190D (2.5 turbo) is a W201. 300D (3L turbo, 2.5L turbo, etc) is a W124.

If you need a quick check as to what's what, hit buy parts and look at the years of interest (i.e. 87). The models will have the engine and chassis listed

Oh, I didn't know some that the w201 and w124 shared motors. Were some 190 2.5s turbocharged? What are the differences between the w124 and w201? Which seems better/more desirable?

Oh dear, um. Yes, there were 2.5 Turbo 602's in the 190D's. I believe it was an '87 only thing.

The W124 is the more expensive, larger chassis. W201 is smaller, lighter weight. Not sure about the safety perspective (W124's are pretty good). The amount of desire is up to you... I've only had a W123 and W124, so I can't comment. I've driven a family friends 190E, but that really doesn't say a lot... Perhaps I might test the water and try a 190D in the future, but I do quite like my W124.

I guess, it would be like comparing a current day C-class with an E-class.

You might just have to go look at a local example and see for yourself

From what I've heard the 87 190D 2.5T's are little rockets because of the lighter chassis. Good luck finding one though...auto trader only has one in the whole country. 87 was a good vintage for MB diesels

If you could find one, the 602.96 powered 190 would be a fantastic commuter car. Better mileage than the 124 and decent power when you need it. However I'm partial to the 124; I like the extra space and the more modern chassis.

Where are the numbers

Very interesting article. I have a 92 300SD W140 body. After reading the wiki article, I look on my engine for a 3.51 replacement head block, but the number that I have on the head block is 603.016. Is this means I have and engine that will soon will have a rod bost it and good by car? I like the car but I'm not expending $2k-$3k to replace and engine. What is your opinion

I believe the SD is the W126 platform

OM602 = 5 Cylinders
OM603 = 6 Cylinders (known as rod benders???)
OM606.910 = 6Cyl

Diesels in the W124 body style or E-class
Theres is no W124 300SD.
There is an 87 300D and 300TD (wagon?) , 90-93 300D, and 95 E300 Diesel.

1987 gave us the 190D 2.5 turbo, the 300D 3.0L turbo, and the 300SDL 3.0L turbo. A good year for all except cylinder heads, which are still better than most other cars on the road, ...

The 190D 2.5 turbo is quick, feels quicker than the '87 300D, but the '87 300D is actually 1second faster to 60mph and about 10mph faster on the top-end. Also heavier, larger, better ride, enough headroom and rear seat leg room for us 6' and taller folks.

Those 87 300Ds really seem to be rare. Just did an Autotrader search...NOT ONE came up. How often does one see a good condition one for sale?

Good condition are hard to find, the '87 wagon even harder. I've looked at two of them within an hour of me that weren't worth the $600 and $1200 that they were asking, I did buy one for parts for $450 that was in better condition than the first two (but crashed).
