benzproducts.com DVDs ???
The other night I stumbled upon a website that's called benzproducts.com. They have some interesting DVDs' including one that details the rebuild of a 300 Turbo Diesel engine. Anyone have any experience with these guys? The video seems pretty cool!

The Transmission rebuild DVD is the most interesting find; as there is little information available in this area. However, it would be nice if someone already had one and could tell us the quality.
Some of the others seem over priced compared to the Transmission DVD. As examples the Prechamber Removal and Differential Oil Change ones. Is there anyone out there who has viewed any of this companies DVDs?

hey diesel911, hope all is well with you. I agree, the transmission is also interesting. The other ones are a bit priced for what they show. Anyone seen them?

Sorry to bring back an old thread. Just wanted to see if any of you have purchased or viewed any of the aforementioned videos. Thanks.

He has a sample or two on YouTube. Look at them and decide.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewbqXxN9iA0&list=UUjZwwazvai9rrs15Xq3biYA&index=3 His information may be good but he spends so much time being disorganized, making amateur engineering comments, etc., I find him really hard to listen to. To say nothing of the bush league approach to the camera. If he is truly able to show a full transmission rebuild, however, now that would be something.

I used to make some special Tools for Mercedes and one Customer modified the Tool and buggered up and had to by something to fix it and wanted Me to Pay. He bought it from Me direct and I had an Email from Him saying how he tried to modify the Tool. I did not refund Him any Money back so He complained to PayPal. PayPal contacted Me and ask for the Delivery Conformation Number and I also said I had the Guys admission that He had modified the Tool. PayPal Emailed back and said they did not care about what the Guy did to the Tool. On non-eBay purchases they only care if the Tool was delivered or not. So I did not have to prove he messed the Tool Up and have to pay anything back because I have proof of Delivery. That was like 5 Years ago and I don't know what PayPal’s policy is not but if you get a Vid and you don't think it is worth it or it will not play properly you PayPal may not refund you. Rebuilding a 4 Cycle Diesel Engine is about the same a rebuilding a 4 cycle Gasoline Engine with the exception that the Fuel System is different. Since the Mercedes Factory Manual is available online and on CD that is a good source of the spces. Also the Book Engine Manual used to show up on eBay. Having the right measuring equipment to see what is out of spec and knowing how to use Micrometers and other measuring Tools can be found on the Internet or in Books but it Hands on practice with someone who has used them frequently is much better. In short what I am saying as an example Money spent on a real Mercedes Manual with the specs is likely a better investment then the Vid. If you have a large Library there may be Gasoline Engine Rebuild Vids and Books. If you are dead set on the Rebuild Vid you migh post in the Wanted and forsale areas in the various Mercedes threads and look on Ebay to see if any previously owned Vids are for sale.

I know you asked for input on the videos, not for general comments. But indulge me while I make two points.
First, I would start by suggesting that you ask the publisher of the videos what qualifications he has for instructing others to rebuild a diesel engine. He blows way too much hot air in his sample video for me to ever put him on my radar for a DIY video. I also find some of what he says to be simplistic and judgmental. Ok I can live with that for an alternator upgrade project but if he carries over the "I know better" attitude to the engine rebuilding, then run don't walk, away. Now, when I say that, I am assuming that by rebuild you mean a complete rebuild. If you just want to re-ring, there is ample expertise on the forum to assist you. Second: there have been discussions over the years on this forum about rebuilding versus going for a used motor. The consensus tends to end up with going for used. If you search you will find a parts list for a complete rebuild put together by Whunter, one of the mods and a highly experienced technician. If you have not digested that yet, you will want to. If you do get the video, I encourage you to check anything said in the video with the forum members.

If rebuilding is possible at a reasonable cost always depends on if the Expensive Parts are still within spec or can be reconditioned back to spec.
You won't know that until the Engine is apart and parts are inspected and or measured.

I watched a 1/2 hour of the rebuild one, he seemed to be figuring it out as he went. Lousy camera, lighting, heavy long island (I think) regional english. The balance wouldn't play on my computer at the time. I see it on the shelf every once in a while, but do not revisit it. If you're committed to a rebuild (because it think it would be cool to do one). Look into friends or community college or adult ed courses that would give you direct access to tools and skills involved w/ teardown & reassembly. Smarmy as he comes off, a Kent Bergsma rebuild video would be neat.
I would attempt a lawn mower or similar engine rebuild first, you'll see a bit of the elephant, at least. How to keep your vw Alive for the complete idiot, while written for a completely different car, is a good general reference to getting things apart and back together. An engine swap is not a really hard job to do for a W123.

We had the idiot book out this past weekend! I was showing my son how to do a valve clearance check and adjustment on our '66 VW. You're right, it's a good reference.

Thanks for all of the responses. I've decided not to purchase the video. The seller did respond promptly to my email and let me know that he does in fact have copies ready to ship. I already have the blue Mercedes engine manual and will probably run by one of the local machine shops and see if I can do some shadowing. Thanks again.
