I have a 1978 240d I bought with inheritance money- The only thing that is left of my grandmother and it's dear to me. I have spend 2 years and alot of $$$ making it perfect. Now it seems I need a new engine. Anyone know of a reputable source for one. I don't really feel like taking any cheap risks. Thanks Chris

Where are you located? I'm planning on decommisioning my 240D in the near future. The body's pretty bad, but the engine is still good.

Buying a parts car is a good source.

Face it, a re-manufactured engine will cost some plus removal and replacement. It'll outlast ya.

Metric motors also offers top ends.

find out what's wrong. Why do ya need a whole new engine???

As suggested above it is better to have the potential used Engine already inside of a Car so that you can test drive it and see if the Engine is good.

Buying an un-testable used Engine on a pallet or sitting on a Garage Floor is a gamble.
You might just as well pull a used Enigine from a Junk Yard yourself and purchase the Insurance on it so that if it is no good you can at lest get another one.
Even with the Insurance there would be a lot of wasted labor and you only have a liminted time to put the used Engine into your Car to test it for the Insurance to apply.

Ok, leonard in vt, first you need to tell us what the symptoms are of your current motor. the 240 is a well built motor, but many things can cause the engine to seem dead when in fact, a simple or tedious amount of service can bring it back to life.
we can help.
and if not, at least we can offer a second (or really, third and fourth etc...) opinions confirming or denying the death of the motor.

Number one rod bearing? Hole in the block? No compression? Front damper spun? How many miles on the car if known?

Question

The oil fill cap blows half way across my yard when the engine in running, I leave an oil spot the size of a large pizza every time I start it and theres a large clatter, sound like hard hitting metal and not thin metal. I am actually thinking the noise is coming from the trans/engine bellhousing area though. Any thoughts?

The oil cap blowing off might just be a clogged breather. Blowby gasses are supposed to exit the engine via a hose from the valve cover that runs over to the air cleaner housing. If it's blocked, that could explain the oil cap.

Can you tell where the oil is leaking from?

Is this clatter you describe rythmic and does it happen at either crankshaft speed, or one half crankshaft speed? I'm trying to figure out if you have a rod knock (very bad), a valvetrain issue (not quite as bad), or maybe a failed clutch cover or some other clutch issue (still not good, but fixable without pulling the engine). If you can post a video with good sound on youtube, that would help us with diagnosis.

Other ideas: have you found oil in your cooling system or coolant in your oil? Are the coolant and oil levels relatively stable?
