96 E300D overheated and now runs a little different
So my radiator broke and leaked all the coolant out. My dad was driving the car back from work when this happened. Luckily his commute is only about 10 mins. He was almost home when he realized that the car still was not heating and that the engine overheated. He says it never went into the red but was close. the next day i started the car and it ran just fine. Today i started it and moved it into the garage so that i could replace the radiator, and it also ran fine. Once I replaced the radiator and filled it with coolant, and fired it up is started and ran pretty good then after a minute started to run rough at idle and even when the reved the engine. I let it run for about 5 mins to see what would happen and it got smooth and ran fine again. There was a lot of white smoke during the rough idle, but then it went away. I drove it around the block and it was fine and smooth, but now I notice that there was a little ticking noise coming from the rear of the engine. It was also smoking a little bit from the engine which also went away after 15 mins. Now I am worried that something could have happed to the motor. Any suggestions.

Look around closely at the passenger side rear of the block under the exhaust manifold. You may see where there has been some seepage. Keep an eye on your reservoir coolant level.

Also when i first started it up there was some condensation coming from the exhaust which was black and greasy. I am worried that something could be wrong with the head gasket.

Condensation coming from the exhaust of a cold engine is common, and it is sometimes contaminated with soot. As the prior poster suggested, I would keep a close eye on the coolant level, and make close inspections of the engine itself to see if you can find any seepage from the head to the block. You make no mention of where the radiator failed. If it leaked from the top portion, there is the possibility that coolant may have sprayed onto the engine, and that was what you saw coming from the engine. As for the ticking sound, that may be more difficult to pin down. My suggestion to you would be to drive the car on short trips, and see how it performs. If it is a head gasket, you will know soon enough. Also, keep a close eye on the oil level and any signs of brown sludge on the dipstick. That can be an indication of coolant getting into the oil. Good luck.....
