There was a ford ranger with a 617 in it on Nashville craigslist about a year ago. He only had one engine shot listed and it looked tight, but doable. When my Izuzu pup rusts in two (as they all do) I think I might try to shoehorn a 617 into a ranger. Iv'e also thought about a dodge dakota, but then I would be driving a dodge.
I think a Jeep comanche would be ideal, but they are getting hard to come by.

Did you do the divorced transfer case, or is it 2wd?

Hats off to those who can make engines fit into other vehicles . . . wow! I do wish there were small extended cab trucks (like the early '90's model Toyota's and Nissan's) that had a diesel in it from the factory produced today. I think there would be a good market for them.

I have seen a few Toyotas converted with the 617. You have to cut out the radiater support, and it is a very tight fit. I have a spare 617 and was planning to do this(have two Toyotas) but just not going to be worth it. Think an engine out of the 240 would fit nicely, but might be less power then I would be happy with. In the end i put a hitch on the 300d(thanks Daw Two) Now at least I can pull a small trailer.

The Isuzu Pup is just way to under powered, something like 58 hp. Need a good highway cruiser, not a little putt- putt.

Now I just need to put my Detriot diesel back in the 47 Dodge.... Love to hear that engine roar....

get a wagon

simple solution get a w123 tdt. i've hauled over 400# on the roof rack, tow hitch on back for trail. driven from here to lima ohio caring all the home brew i could. and camping gear and dog food and... never slowed down, well a little in west virginia mountains, but we were loaded. empty it out and haul 5-7 people. flatten the saets haul 4-7 dogs. or lumber or throw a blanket back there and take a nap.

only thing it does have is a cup holder. but it holds or hauls everything else everyday.

http://inlinethumb04.webshots.com/45...425x425Q85.jpg im using the stock mercedes trans with a Jaguars that run adapter to turn the 3 bar flange to a u joint. My daughter didnt want a standard. I am looking for a divorced Nissan transfer. (suposedly a easy adapt) My bigest problem is that since I got this jeep running it has been my daughters daily driver until she slid it into a bridge in the rain. It currently is sitting on a trailer covered in snow in the side yard. As soon as it warms and dries up I will fix it again. Most people putting 617s in jeeps are using the adapter plate by Hulk green. that lets you bolt it to stock jeep trans.

Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger diesel, Izuzu Dmax, etc. All in production. Abundant in Iraq. Not sold here.

I know you wouldn't do that. But there are other folks out there who will. Even if it's a bad transmission issue, they will kill a excellent condition benz for the power plant.
