engine stand

After a lot of deliberation. I have decided to just fix the NA engine from the 300d. (engine swap thread)
Will a 1000 pound engine stand be enough. I have no idea what this engine weighs.
Also thinking of selling the turbo engine, and trans. to cover the parts. What are they worth?
thanks

You are well under 1000lbs, but consider what the capacity is with the boom extended, you might want to go heavier.

You said engine stand, so i think you mean the thing with 3 or 4 wheels that you rebuild the engine on.
If so 1000 lb is plenty.

If you mean a Cherry Picker style engine hoist, it is still enough. I have pulled a Chevy 454 out with mine.

It would worry me to pull the powerstroke diesel out of the wife's truck though!

Doug,

I used a 3 caster stand and it was not sufficient for the weight of this engine... I don't care what its rated for.

Use a 4 caster stand

Harbor Freight sells a 1000 lb-rated stand with four wheels for $50 - works fine for me...

Yeah, HF four caster 1000 lb one is good for mine. It says in the manual to not roll it with an engine on it It seemed fine when I was rollin it around.

Funny. What do they think that design feature is for, then?

Hey can someone post a pic of how the engine mounts to the stand - I am just curious because I might want to do it someday too

Four bolts through bell-housing mount holes (one is a starter hole).

One of the worst things to do when rebuilding and engine is to get in a hurry. Ask me how I know this.

Get a good work table and a parts grid, lots of baggies and a marker.

I'd talk with MPlafleur. He might talk you out of it.

OM617 weighs roughly 550 lbs, so you're good there. You probably know that already though!

Tranny is another 100lbs roughly.

Cheers,

Michael
