240D Two Middle Vents
 

The two middle vents in my 82 240D always blow the same temperature air regardless of the heat setting, while the far left and far right vents both blow temperature according to my dial setting. I have manual climate control. Anybody know what's wrong?

As far as I know, that's normal. The outer two vents are the only dash vents that blow heated air. The center vents are only for fresh air, and AC if you have it.

You should slide the lever on the center vents to the right, to close them while using the heater.

My 77' Porsche 924 was the same way, and I think most German cars around that time were designed this way...not sure why.

As stated above the center vents are fresh air. The lever below it with a triangle on it opens and closes the vent. The blower will push air through it but it's not heated. In cars with AC the center vents blow the cold air.

Just got my AC working, and only my center vents blow cold air. My mechanic seemed to think that my outer vents should also blow cold air, and that something is wrong...is this right?

I think your mechanic is right. If you're talking about your diesel.

Center vents are the only vents that blow the cold air from the AC.

Post above answers your question. I have a feeling your mechanic does not work on these old cars regularly.. The center ones blow cold/fresh, the side ones hot.

Those descriptions seem a bit vague..."At times, air may be emitted from movable nozzles" WTF?

That diagram makes sense. Cold air only comes out those two center ones. It's a little confusing. If only the two center ones blow fresh air, does that mean the rest of the vents recirculate the air in the cabin?

My 240D w/manual control & A/C that works blows cold (A/C'd air) out the side dash vents too! You can control the amount of air out of the side vents by twisting the inside center of the vent, also the whole vent will "roll" around to adjust the direction of the flow!

Look at the last picture above (#4) and 1st column . . . "Rapid Cooling"

Definitely get cold air from all 4 vents with the AC on. In San Antonio with a PO r134a conversion, I need all the help I can get!

Maybe it is a vacuum pod issue? I know when I turn on the AC control, a pod inside the dash 'pops', then I start getting cold air out of the vents.

My manual AC does the same thing . Definitely a pod issue or vacuum problem. the one by the blower controls the cabin / outside air door mine sometimes needs a push. I also put the lower handle "defrost / floor" to floor.
If the max ac knob is "in" (blue knob )
floor vents shut off increasing air to upper vents.
If max ac knob is pulled "out"
then Bi level is on and ac will come out both top vents and floor vents .

Theres a pod on the passenger side by the center console. This controls the turning off of the floor vents in max AC mode. If its not working the max knob can be in or out and air will constantly come out of the floor vents. I found that by accident with a mighty - vac. The line comes frome behind the AC max switch.

I also suffer San Antonio summers so the 80% cabin 20% outside set up had to go. The door is in the channel leading to the cabin on the firewall below the windshield. I removed the cowl vent (black screen in front of windshield ) and with my best ability sealed the 1/4 inch gap around the fresh air door. it sits about arms length in the channel. I used silicone . Sure its inoperable but if I need fresh air I roll down the window.

The blower on these systems with all the vents opened is far from what I would consider adequate . More like a light breeze and if your evaporator is dirty its even worse.

My next project : Find a bigger blower and adapt !!
