Windshield Wiper Speed Settings

Here's a good one:

My 240D has four windshield wiper speed settings: off, I, II, and III. Off and III work fine; on I and II, nothing happens. Anybody had this issue or know how to fix it?

Yah, you probably need a new switch.

Have you ever done it or know how to replace it?

On the 126 I have, not the 123. I assume it is simliar...

steering wheel comes off
switch is unbolted
unplug it behind the dash
throw old in trash
installation is reverse of removal.

The switch in my SDL failed and caused the headlights not to function properly.

Cool, thanks.

Are the headlights on your SDL controlled via a steering column shaft like the windshield wipers or via rotary knob on the dash? Interesting that it would affect the headlights; at least on my 240 I'd be surprised.

Yes I have the knob at the left to turn them on/off, but the combo switch is for the flash to pass/high beams, wipers, and turn signals.

Power simply is unable to transfer through the unit. I bypassed it by installing a new switch to test and the lights went back to working properly.

I mean, after 25 years stuff just breaks and wears out.

Good point. I've been fortunate, most of the stuff that breaks and wears out has been either the rubber components or the bulbs. For all the bad stuff people say about German electrical anything, the simple electrical system in my Benz has held up pretty well. YMMV

Pretty much, I cannot complain for the length of time these parts function.

l had only #1 and #2 setting with no intermittent setting.
Had to replace the multi function switch.
Pull off the rubber cover on the side of the steering column and remove the bad switch.
Easy fix
