New Path --- 617 engine idea
So, yesterday, school was closed, work was closed,
and Chameleon's new owner was drivng her off. (See the other thread) I had some time to kill and was looking for a w123 grill and hood star for a buddy, so I went for a walk. While walking, I had a thought. My work truck and daily driver is too big. It won't fit in my garage. In order to park in a shopping center, restaurant, grocery store, I have to park in the lower forty. Now, you can see, that other's have walked before me and I've searched the previous threads on this forum and a few other forums, too. (See links below) So, I'd really like to have a 617 engine in a "smaller work type vehicle" like:
my other work type needs. Must be able to haul some stuff, pull a trailer, etc. If anyone has an idea, please throw it this way. Yes, I have already performed some searches on this forum and others. I'm amassed an entire folder of links; here are some of them. So, if you want to do some background reading or do a similiar project, the following may help you: 5 cly turbo diesel into pickup http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8362 300TD no power, installed to 86 Dodge P/U (question) 617 in another Land Rover 617 into small truck or jeep. 617 Turbo engine into '92 Ford 350 possible ? How about a diesel Toyota Hilux? Oh wait, they never sold those here
How come the rest of the world gets all the diesel offerings and we get squat?

new CAFE standards, Emissions, red tape, etc. I agree it is quite frustrating, but hey at least we got our MBs.

Seems like make work to me. Your current truck will tow anything you want. Can't have that with some little truck. Time would be better spent getting the DD in near perfect shape.

I'm putting the OM617 into an 81 Courier, not the roomiest vehicle and I will have to cut out the firewall a bit to make room, but it'll be worth it.
The turbo 617 out of the box is comparable to the carbureted Ford 300-6 in power, power curve, and longevity. I have a 78 E150 with a 300 that will get an OM617 and MB auto if I get another one dropped in my lap. |

I've always thought an early 4-runner (with a removable cargo-area top) would make a great home for an OM617. Others have done it, so you wouldn't be totally reinventing the wheel (I didn't have time to peruse your list of links - one or more may be to a similar project). 2WD Jeep Cherokees or Comanche pickups make a great home for the OM617 too - though if you want 4x4 it gets a little more difficult ...

Guys.
I have just about concluded that 617s need to stay in w123s. The 5th cylinder makes it tough to put into something else.

I like the idea of a Isuzu Trooper (but a 616 would be a better fit)
I also like the idea of a Jeep XJ swap- since it took the AMC 6 cylinder there should be clearance for the OM617. You would probably have to fab up oil pans and you might have to loose the 4WD unless you can find a divorced transfer case or do the custom bell housing adapter to bolt the original Jeep transmission to the MB engine. Somebody did set of calculations and if you take a Jeep that gets 14mpg with its gasser and you convert it to OM617 power and get 27mpg, you would save $1100 over 12000 miles. I could see an OM617 returning that kind of mileage in a CJ since it is so light. An XJ you would probably get 300SD mileage...

sd mileage is in the 28mpg range... 123 (D) mileage is in the 24 range... *(due to aerodynamics) so the car with the best air shape and lowest weight would get the best mileage.

617 in a Landcruiser FJ60 would be nice, and there are a few people who have done it. Believe I found them on a 'Cruiser site, back when I was envisioning how cool it would be to drop one in mine. The FJ60 is already one of the slowest vehicles with the lowest top speed available on the road, so there would be very little (if any) loss in performance

I always thought a ranger pickup with a 190D turbo 5 spd would be a nice combination.

I would never "hurt" such a beautiful car as pictured below; however, I haven't had much interest in the 617 engine with transmission in the silver car in this thread --- just trying to find a home for it and get out of my BIG DODGE truck.
