Still smokes too much on start up.....
Hey guys trying to get a car ready to sell and I have replaced both filters, done a diesel purge, cleaned the ALDA, adjusted the valves and replaced the injector nozzles. But the car still smokes a lot on start up, only when given gas and only when it has been sitting. Anyone got any ideas I haven't thought of? I am starting to lean towards the turbo.....

Year and model? Miles on engine? What color smoke? Is the oil level stable over time, or is it losing some?

Sorry guys thought I put that in there...duh...1985 300D 225,000 miles. I think the glow plugs are all good the ohm okay and the car starts up fast enough. Loses some oil over time, and the smoke is grayish white, smells really bad.

Grayish white=probably fuel, though I had an old Suzuki with bad valve seals that blew white smoke when cold and burned a quart of oil every 200 miles.
When the injector nozzles were replaced, were the injectors tested and balanced? Also, I seem to remember a thread on here where someone had a car that was getting a little air in the fuel system, but not much. On cold starts, he was having a little bit of slow starting and then smoke when it did start. I think this was from the air bubbles eating up some of the injection pressure and causing poor spray patterns until the system self bled. I think I have this problem on my 240D, but it's up for tranny donor status as soon as one of the six shops I've contacted gets back to me with a reasonable quote.

Went outside with a flashlight and noticed something new, or at least I hadn't seen it without the white snow. The snow behind the car is black and sticky, almost like oil is in it or something, Its not like dust its like a film almost.... Ideas on this one?
No injectors were not balanced. And I checked the lines on the fuel system before they look fine with no cracks. One of the injector return lines is weeping but I didn't think it would be a problem. Again guys thanks for all the help.... |

Another idea for the list:
Possibly bad valve guide seals on valve stems. I'm soon to do this job on my 300D which also smokes when I start it up but clears out when it's warm. I believe these seals are able to be changed without to much problem. With bad valve seals, oil will leak down into the cylinders especially after it's been sitting a while.

I am not sure what a ' valve guide seal' is if it is not a valve stem seal...which Skippy mentioned.... smoke upon startup which clears up after a few minutes is classic worn valve stem seal symptom. They are not expensive and with care can be done by a DIY 'er.
Since you will have the valve train opened up I always suggest putting new springs since they are cheap and new valve caps and locking nuts since they affect the ability of the valves to hold valve clearance specs well ... as per the FSM suggestions.... I also suggest putting new rotators on all valves at that time if you can find them. This is also per the FSM suggestions....

Did you do a Diesel Giant type swap of old to new Injector Nozzles? While the Engine is smoking what is it running rough? If the Engine is running rough; while it is idling try loosening one Injector Line nut at a time and tighting it back up. If when you loosen the Injector there is not much change in how the Engine is running you have located your prblem cylinder. It also might be interesting to recheck your Valve Adjustment.

Absolutely! --Its surprising how much the smaller locking-nuts can wear, I believe there is a min. thickness listed in the FSM, --worth replacing anyway. as the threads wear internally--The last thing you want is for one to come loose. As its a smoky issue on a high-miler, Worth checking the timing-chain for 'stretch' and re-setting pump timing....

Yes Diesel giant style injector swap was done, used Monark nozzles. Yes the car ran a little rough when it was warming up before the injector swap. But now the car idles great but still smokes
Anyone have a link to how to do the valve stem seals? |

It sounds to me like incomplete combustion as a result of a cold engine. Have you done a compression test? Do you have a video of the smoke you can post on YouTube. Almost all old diesels will smoke some when cold. My 3208 will lay down a smokescreen large enough for a battalion when cold but is clean once it warms up.
I certainly wouldn't go to the work of replacing valve stem seals without further confirmation they are bad if you are getting gray/white smoke when cold.

Sorry no video and I can't really take one, cats knocked the camera off of the bookshelf and it broke. What does your smoke smell like? Mine smells terrible and there was all of that thick black stuff that came out of the tailpipe. Does yours do the thick black "stuff"?
