Do I need an engine shock obsorber?!

While removing my motor mounts I had the driver side shock absorber mount (aluminum with rubber filled center) completely disintegrate while I while I was trying to remove the engine shock...

I see the price of this new gizmo is over $200.... (is gold plated, maybe)? Anyway, was looking around for a used one to put in and found a guy who is a 'mechanic' that has a used one but he was basically talking me out of it, saying that the engine shock is completely useless..

This guy has no credibility with me so he didn't make me a believer - in fact, I seem to recall reading something quite the opposite, something to the effect that the engine shock absorber is designed to arrest the engine shudder right before the engine comes to a complete stop...

What say you -

Thanks,
James

No, the older models don't have them. My wagon has had one bad one for a long time and it's been fine.

The non turbos didn't have two anyway. The biggest help is when the engine shuts down, there is a pretty hard last shake.
But $200? From where and do they do your taxes?
Which car?

Ho-Hum....

All the Non Turbo cars with 617 in UK have 2 engine shock-dampers...

--One each side. So for that matter, does the Gasser M110 280 engines in the W123.....:D

Whether they are essential, who knows, Never removed them, never needed to!

200 for a new one seems rather a lot, Sure I saw them somewhere for only 20 quid apiece....

My 240 doesn't have any.

They run just over $50 on Fastlane.

MercFan 02-15-2010 05:19 PM

This is for the 300SDL - and it is over $201 on FastLane - it's the engine shock mount that's bad, not the shock itself, but in order to install the engine shock I need a good mount for it.... that's the kicker...

Trying to decide if it's really worth spending over $200 for something that really isn't necessary, but then again, the engineers have put it there for some reason...

You could always look in a junkyard.

Here in the U.S. that's not the case.

? All four of our 617 powered cars have two of them. I had a worn out shock on one side of my engine so I just left it off when I reinstalled the motor in my car....makes no difference, though, probably since the shock was dead. I don't mind a small shake when I turn off the car....its perfectly smooth when running.

YES they are needed...

Unless you want premature engine mount failure, and excess engine shake at idle.

No self-respecting Mercedes Owner would ever get parts at a junkyard. However, the local environmentally friendly, and green dismantling and recycling center for automobiles may be a good source for such a part.

Ridiculous much! Call it what you want. Men's Mall I've heard it called as well. I'm a self respecting MB Owner and I go to the junkyards. It's all used parts that are worthless to their previous owner.

You'll never find a brand new M-pump, and even if you could it would cost you several suitcases full of cash. I found one at the junkyard for $10.

90% of the wrecking yards I've been to are far from green. They may be reselling parts and recycling the cars, but with all the fluid and oil slicks that are on the ground, I think that it wouldn't qualify them as green.

I also got mine at the Junkyard. It was $2.50 for the upper and lower.

You didn't appreciate my attempt at pompous, self-righteous humor?

My '81 300CD had two dampers and the european 617 I pulled from a 300D did as well. However they both (all four) were shot, as the typically don't last very long... I'll be going without them, their just too expensive for how long they last and how little they really do.
