I have a few hours here and there, then travel a lot, so I have lots of time to ask questions and think about how to go at it next... My main mistake was relying on the diesel giant online DIY, which seems to leave out a few major steps.

Finally got them out. Took off the shocks and the bracket that attaches to the engine near the mount.
There really was no other way. Folks that can take them out without lifting the engine must be taking the bracket off the engine block, though I've never seen it mentioned. I bet it's doable but likely not worth the extra wrestling... Now to get them back in... Hints???
