Metalick clicking

Starting about 2 days ago there is a clicking from the front of the engine at idle that increases with rpm, at higher rpms it sounds like a hiss. I was thinking maybe stuck lifter? but would that come on so quickly? Anyone else have thoughts?

I am troubleshooting a knock also. So, I am interested in your progress!

1. First thing to try is cracking the injector lines one by one to see if the sound goes away. If it does, its your injectors

2. Chain tensioner. If you face the car, it is on the left side of the block. The spring gets worn out. Remove the tensioner and renew the spring.

3. Listen to the frequency of the sound at idle. Count the knocks. Try to determine if it happens at idle speed (800rpm) or at 1/2 the idle speed, i.e. camshaft speed.

4. A source of noise that several people have reported is from the vacuum pump and timing device. There are parts there that wear out which results in looseness of the timing device above spec. That's the angle I am currently working with my knock.

5. To eliminate low end noise (bearings) inspect the oil filter. You could also drop the oil pan; hope you dont find any metal parts or shavings there...

Please report your progress!!!

Well, I'm just guessing here...
Check your belts and pullys. Make sure your induction system is clean and tight.
Listen up front with the engine running. You may be able to zero in on the source.

6. Buy a cheap harbor freight mechanic's stethoscope and carefully poke around to see if you can pinpoint the source.
